I was wondering if it would be possible to have my black slide polished or have it sanded down to the silver steel?

yes, and it would rust overnight....

It would rust even if you kept light oil on it?

You could keep it lightly oiled, and it might not rust, but it wouldn't be very useable. If you want a steel slide, buy a Stainless steel slide, I think there is one in the "flea market", made by Colt.
That would be more feasible.

If you want the look of stainless on a blue steel slide, you need to have it hard-chromed.

Bad idea - I've seen many military guns worn down to bare steel (or, more likely, having suffered in the hands of conscripts who used steel wool on them), and you would really have to take it down every other day, wipe it and re-oil it. Put any shiny finish you like, but don't leave it in the white.

i did just that as an experiment last winter.
I had no rust issues for several months.

However, on the advise of many far wiser than me, it was strongly recommended I protect it.
so...I sprayed on a clear guncote type finish i bought from Brownells
That didn't work and only bubbled up on the polished steel.
Next, i sprayed on some clear gloss lacquer.
That finish went on smooth and stuck.
i don't know how well it will hold up.
I been shooting my other 1911s more, so that Rock has been in the safe more than out

Thank you, Rekladan
That pistol started life as a bare bones RIA GI model.
I put a lot of hours in making it the way I wanted it.
BTW, it was a labor of love
Thanks are also due to John for his site and the wealth of knowledge shared here by all the members.
'cause I didn't know a main spring from a recoil spring when I found this site 2 years ago and bought my first 1911
In two short years I've gone from just a dumb carpet cleaner to a wannabe back yard gun smith and semi-custom gun maker :lm:

I am wondering if the lacker does not hold up, if a clear coat of duracoat would work. I have not worked with Duracoat yet, but have read great things about it in other forums.

I've heard of folks using a good quality car wax. Maybe something with a high carnuba content would work. And I've heard of this stuff, Blue Wonder Armadillo (http://www.bluewonder.us/BlueWonderArmadillo.html) that sounds like a sort of wax for guns.
