Hello, long time lurker and reader, but I finally have a question that I can't find the answer to and can't figure out on my own.

I have two 1911's that this condition is present in, one a Springfield and the other a Caspian frame and slide based blaster I built by myself (this site inspired me to build it).

Anyway to the question. If I stick a loaded mag in the gun and release the slide with the slide lock I've got definite signs of hard stem bind (big smilies on cases) and also the tell tale ka chunk sound. Now neither pistol has failed to go into battery, which surprises me with the size of some of the dents.

If released via sling shot method, no case dents, nice slappy sound.

What the cause to this condition is has me baffled :butthead: . There no signs of stem bind during fire. Both pistols have been 100% reliable.

The problem doesn't really bother me, I'm a south paw so releasing the slide via sling shot is easier IMO anyway.

BTW I only use Checkmate Hybrid mags
All ammo is reloads H&G #68 bullets seated to 1.250". I've experiment with different lengths but it doesn't seem to matter. I've already ruled out the extractors.

Thanks for your time.

How long since you last replaced the recoil spring in that pistol? Also, are you using any shock buff in it?

John thanks for the reply,

I don't have shock buffs in either of the guns.

Now that you mention it, its probably about time for new springs, but it seems to me that this problem was present even with fresh springs, but I'll try it anyway.

Take one of those Sharpie markers and cover your barrel's ramp with it. Then try the slide release test and see where the nose of the round hits the barrel's ramp. Then do the same with the sling-shot method. Is there a difference in the marks you see on the barrel's ramp?

Maybe you should try a GI-style mag too.
