I'm going to put a stock Colt barrel into one of my project guns and I just have a few questions. First, how does the new throating help in feeding? Any thoughts? And how does Colt mark them, I mean do they say ".45 ACP" or "Colt .45 ACP"? Are they marked with N.M. also? Also, what is the general opinion of Colt barrels? Some pictures would help. Thanks guys.

The dimpled barrel does aid in feeding aggressive hollow points and semi wad cutters (though I have not had trouble with the pre dimpled barrels).
Colt marks their barrel hoods Colt 45 Auto (.45 Automatic is the caliber).
The National Match barrels are marked NM.
Colt barrels are quality.

They have "enhanced", narrow hoods, barrels now so just make sure that fits your project gun.

Maybe they still produce the standard type also, not sure. Just FYI!

Colt barrels are fine. The dimpled throating is fine. If you need to, you could just have a good smith re-throat the barrel to a more traditional modern spec. I would not touch it unless your project gun give you feeding issues.

As a visual aid to those new members of the forum who might not know what we're talking about, the photograph below shows the Colt "dimpled" barrel...

sir, i'm quite a rookie when it comes to 1911's, especially with colts. i'm just curious to know the difference between the stock colt barrels and the national match's for i'm also planning to change the barrel of my 1911 with a colt. May i also ask the cost of a n.m. barrel for i am preparing the budget for this. thank you very much sir

Would you buy a factory Colt enhanced barrel or replaced the Colt barrel with a Nowlin enhanced with the Gold Cup kit? I would prefer to stay with Colt but question there current quality of barrels. Is this a valid concern?

No. IMHO it is NOT a valid concern.

Colt makes excellent barrels. i don't recall a single complaint about the quality of their barrels...they are among the best on the market.

I just put a colt NM series 80 barrel in my original series 70 pistol and other than a slightly narrower hood it fits perfectly, and it feeds the wadcutters my old barrel had trouble with, no problems. It has about 400 rounds thru it so far and the only hiccups were due to my reloads.
Got it thru Numerich in 3 days.

boox: where did you find your barrel? Numrich continues to be out of my model Gold Cup Series 80 MK IV and Brownells shows only the Commander size listed or maybe I missed something there. Thank you all again for your input.

I have had great luck with Colt barrels. How do you blow a barrel in a GCNM? O.K. I know a few ways. I would start by calling Colt on their 800 number. They may want the old barrel back. I have got stuff for free over the years, but nothing that big.

I bought this pistol recently and it has a considerable ding in the crown of the barrel. I have not been able to get this pistol to shot like I know it should. It also has issues with certain mags and likes ball ammo the best and I want to shoot semiwad cutters. The person before me did not care for her like they should have and some where along the way she got an abortion for a throat job just to mention a few issues. I am going to strighten out the throat issue first then replace the barrel. How does that sound for starters for this wonderful weapon?
