Now I got your attention. :D

Hey guys I want to join a shooting competition locally. I own a new Imp. def. "Ranger" m1911a1. Hope you've seen my piece also in this forum.

Can you guys please tell me guidelines (check list) for a good competing m1911 pistol? Or anything will do as long as i can hit the black plate?
Anyone here with worn out pistol and still can hit the bulls-eye?

dartman:

Depends on the type of competition...As long as the pistol is reliable & accurate enough, I'd let the type of shooting you want to do dictate if any modifications are "necessary".

you should go to USPSA's website as well as IPSC , IDPA or whatever you think you will be shooting. The rule books are free and downloadable in PDF format. in the USPSA world most 1911 single stacks compete in the Limited and Limited 10 class. as well as the newly added Single stack class. All of the regulations on what you can and cant do to your gun for varying different classes are in the rule books. Have fun. its a blast

Dartman,

Below are some general tips that may help you in buying or fine tuning 1911s:

1. Trigger Pull; most standard division shooters (IPSC) shooters prefer 3.5 to 4.5 lbs

2. Polished feed ramp and throated/ramp barrel; so bullets can feed easily

3. Beveled magazine well; so you can easily insert magazine

4. Sights; am also looking for 1911s and sights of gun is one of those that I usually notice. You should be comfortable with sighst once you aim

5. Some lowers their ejection port; to improve ejection

6. Portruding Beavel Grip Safety;

7. Barrel; Some shooters prefer bull barrel

8. Grip; you should be comfortable with it

Anyone here with worn out pistol and still can hit the bulls-eye?Many of my fellow shootin' buddys use either kimber, wilson combat, para ord., and sometimes springfield's.For the money, para ord. or springfield. Alot of the para's come competition ready.Already set with all the bells and whistles under $900 or less. You can get a basic springfield for around $700 or so and then add what you want later to "sprouce it up" to where you want it to be.As far as for competition.Reliability, to me is in Para's.They come standard with ramped barrels and the power extractor. That way you'll know that not only the rounds will feed but you'll know you won't have extraction problems down the road.Alot of it will depend on what "type" of competition you'll be in.Good luck to you and have fun and be safe. P.S. sorry if I wasn't supposed to mention anything outside of this thread.Just trying to give advice.

Ok on my check list, 1,2,4,5, and 8 are a-ok. How can I tell if a barrel is bull barrel or not? My barrel is a thin on the nozzle and around 5mm or something on the chamber 5" long.

A Bull Barrel is much larger in diameter than the regular Barrel. A larger and heavier barrel's main purpose is to lessen the vibration caused by the explosion of a powder as the bullet leaves the barrel. Because it is heavier, it should (in theory) also lessen recoil. Normally, the gun specs should inform you if you have a regular or bull barrel.

I've been shooting in production division of IPSC (or PPSA locally) for three years and hopefully, will start assembling a 1911 soon. A bull barrel will be also one of my considerations when I assemble. However, this is not a "must" especially if somebody already offers a complete slide assembly with a regular barrel.

Hope my info helps.

?????

I think you need to invest in a new caliper. 5mm is 0.197" ... since by definition the hole inside the barrel of a .45 is .45" in inside diameter (well, more or less -- don't get technical on me here) I'd say you measured something a mite wrong. Barrel OD should be in excess of a half inch.

There's a few of us from my dept. that go to USPSA matches and use our duty gear only, and do really well. Not at the top, but above the middle of the pack.

My barrel is a thin on the nozzle and around 5mm or something on the chamber 5" long. Most bull barrels, from the factory, are commonly used in handguns with less than 5" or 4" barrel lengths. Due to the tolerances they need to have.Goes with the saying, "the best things come in small packages".However, it is possible to get one for a full size 1911.Usually aftermarket upgrade. If your barrel is 5", and hasn't been replaced with a bull barrel and isn't a used weapon, i'd have to say it isn't. If you need to be sure, take it to a gunsmith and he'd be able to take one look at it and tell you.Hope this helps.

saw a Ranger M1911A1 in Hahn Manila. It looks like a good pistol. Aside from knowing the rules, just make sure to practice, practice, practice with it first.

Who knows, I might see you in one of the local competition here. :)

Good Luck.

to Hawkmoon:
Sorry for that. I mean the "thickness" of the barrel. The hole of the barrel, as specified by the manufacturer, is 11.43 mm in diameter which is about .45 inch.

I already broke-in my gun! I have been in the range today and shoot 80 rounds, and see no problem so far with my gun (Imp. Def. Ranger 1911A1) regarding its operation. All rounds successfully passed thrugh.

Da_@#$%#$n! My wife shoots better than me!

Next time I would ask a veteran shooter to try my gun so he can see what things to improve. Perhaps the site or something.

How much will you pay me to NOT tell your wife that you think the reason she shoots better is that the sights are defective? :D :p
