I am new to 1911s. I have a Griffon 1911 Commander size. For some strange reason the extended slide stop fails to catch when I pull the slide back with an empty mag. What is causing this? THanks!

First, have you determined if the problem lies with the pistol or with the magazine(s)? I have tried a couple of magazines that won't lock the slide when empty. I don't use those magazines.
Does this happen with all magazines, with just a few, or maybe only with one? What brand of magazines are you using and what type of follower do they have? Are the mag springs by any chance old and possibly weak?

The new slide stop could also be the culprit. Hawkmoon nailed the potential mag problems. If you still have the original slide stop, install that and see if the problem exists (keeping in mind the mag problem potential). With the old slide stop installed try all your mags. The extended slide stop may be out of spec. Good luck!

Shooting Star followers sometimes will not lock open the slide. Usually, I have seen this using an empty mag to function check a pistol. The follower is too far back in the tube and cannot contact the slide stop.
