I'm hoping one of you guys can lead me in the right direction. I ordered some custom 45s for my Dad, my two sons, and myself, and would like to get custom grips made either out of ivory or wood with one side having the U.S. flag and the other side with the flag of Finland. Who would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

My prettiest grips were made by Hakan Pek of Norway.

Hakan does good work, but the lead time is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay long, especially now that he has his health problems. You can get great grips with quick turn-around time from Sarge (as soon as he gets back from his military training).

All of my guns would wear Pek grips if I could get them, but good luck. Why recommend something that is virtually not available.

I had a set of ivory grips made for a revolver by Nutmeg Sports in CT. Very fast turn around time, and the grips are beautiful. I believe he used to work for Colt, and now they contract out to him.

I would consider, and in the circumstances probably go ahead and separate the making and the decorating. I would buy ivory from one of the established makers Nutmeg is first rate and consider a preferably local scrimshander to do the decoration and color (with other than black) but regular scrimshanding operations.
Notice that for quicker turn arounds laser engraving is available and AlumaGrips and others offer this for quick turn around reasonably affordable true custom decoration but it's not ivory or the best of custom wood.

Esmerelda is without peer. She might be able to fix you up. I'll second Husker on the Alumagrips; Dad's awfully happy with pair we put on his Taurus. Initials on one grip, Navy emblem on the other. I'm using a pair from Suncrafters, sold on Gunbroker. Gorgeous wood (rosewood), great fit, but the checkering is maybe just a little rough. The other downside is that they probably don't do a lot of special orders (flags, etc). Other upside, they cost about $30, with shipping, from Thailand.
