View Full Version : Need some help with My Series 70 Repro Issues

I seem to have a few issues with my Colt Series 70 Reproduction. The worst being that it's ejecting some of the casings straight back at my face. What is usually the cause of this. I have checked extractor tension and it is correct. My Firing Pin stop is a bit loose but it doesn't look like it's allowing the extractor to clock.

My second issue is the slide is rubbing the dust cover...or vice versa. Anything i can do about this? Im assuming polish up the inside of the dustcover to remove any burrs?

Personally, I would contact Colt first and let them know of your concerns, your pistol has a lifetime warranty.

I'd like to avoid having to send out the pistol if it's a simple issue. I have sent this pistol back to colt once already and my CQB is also en route to Wilson so id rather keep this one handy. I'd like to know what causes the issue anyway.

Hello Mrick,

"your pistol has a lifetime warranty"

I believe is not accurate as the booklet that came with the pistol and Colt Repair Dept. advised me that there is only a one year service contract. This is not to say that they may not work with you on a repair after that time period, but it is a Common misunderstanding. If you are having issues I'd let Colt handle it as they have your money. Sorry to hear about your issue with the Reissue, it is a beautiful gun and can be a fine firearm. Go over the firearm if you decide to send it back carefully and get everything done at once.

Hey OD*,
My Colt manual that came with my new Series 70 Reissue, on page 51 "Warranty Statement" says:

Based On Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Colt offers no express warranty on its product line. However, Colt recognizes its obligations concerning implied warranty. Colt also stands behind its product as it has historically, and will continue to provide service to its product line as it has over the years. Colt products will be serviced for a period of one year after date of retail purchase, for defects in materials or workmanship, at no charge to the purchaser. Be sure to retain your sales slip as proof of purchase date when making claim.

This was pointed out to me by Colt when I mentioned their lifetime warranty.
He called it a one year Service contract.

Disturbing. I believe a call to Colt is in order--and maybe a written request for clarification as well. If there is a change, it's been recent. The web site (which we all know is pathetically out of date) still shows lifetime as OD* says. I sent my Series 70 Reproduction back a couple of years ago for similar problems with the brass coming back at my face. I had tried adjusting the extractor but couldn't get it right. They fixed it quick.

I sent emails to several people at Colt in repair and administration and never received a reply. Be advised though that they are repairing a pre-lifetime warranty Gold Cup with cracked frame for no charge so there seems to be leeway in there stated policy. I contacted them and they told me to send it in for evaluation on my dime. When the pistol was cleared for factory repair they sent a check to cover shipment to them. Also found out that any parts removed for whatever reason will not be returned if the repair is done at no charge. I am currently schizophrenic about their repair work as some has been excellent and some has been less so, requiring multiple reshipments back. I believe they will try to do the best they can for you, but you must perservere.

As the poster on another board said: "A good gun ought to be shooting well after only one trip back to the manufacturer."

I think I would seek out a real gunsmith. There are several who post and advertise here.

I bet that Colt would take care of one of their pistols, period.

Kimber has a one year written warranty, but the fact is, they'll repair or replace a bad one, period. I've dealt with the Custom Shop twice (they do all the repairs) and was never asked for a sales receipt, when it was purchased or if I was the original owner. I think that most of the good companies do more than what their attorneys (a guess) recommend that they put in writing. I recently sent an Airlite Ti J frame back to S&W for refinishing (bought new in 1999). They said that they would need to see the gun before they could say if they would cover the cost. Even at that, they e-mailed me a UPS label for the return. They refinished the entire pistol, replaced the barrel shroud and titanium cylinder and returned it to me, all for free.

I believe that the Major manufacturers want their products be be right, period.

I know I sure appreciate them for it, and will continue to do business with them.

Colt stands by its products and will repair any problems/issues. I have sent 2 of my Defenders in the early 90s to fix problems and were not charged a single cent. My Colt 1991A1 SS 5" .45 I bought in 2000 that is my range gun had a crack in the frame just below the left side of the rail and Colt replaced the frame, no charge.
