Ok, So I was wondering if I could put medallions in grips? If So would it be very difficult or would I need a Smith? If so how much should it cost?

I would like to order VZ Grips [Double Diamond Tiger Stripe]. Put the Gold or Nickel [Haven't decided yet] Medallions in it. [Possibly put this on an XSE or Series 80].

Has anyone done anything like this before?

Any links or help or any insight for that matter please feel free to post them.

Pictures are welcome too.

Thank You in advance.

I guess you could. A 1/2 inch forstner (sp) bit would help.

However, your best bet would be to talk to this guy. I bet he can help you out. I bought some Delta medallions from him.......nice guy and good deal.

Yes, it is possible to do it on your own....It's a relatively simple procedure, that I have done a number of times, without having received any training....You should use a Forstner bit in a drill press (as opposed to a regular bit in a handheld drill)....The reason for using the Forstner bit is because it leaves a flat-bottomed hole....Also, super glue in gel form works best for attaching the medallion to the grip (I was told this by a grip maker)....Good luck in your endeavor!

P.S. I forgot to mention that you will need to use a regular style small drill bit to go through the bottom of the Forstner bit hole, to make a pocket for the medallion post....Also, the reason for using a drill press is that it will allow you to make sure that the Forstner bit hole will only be deep enough to set the medallion flush with the top of the grip, as opposed to drilling all the way through the grip (which you don't want to do with the Forstner bit)

You mean he sells those medallions alone? If you do not mind, how much did you pay for a pair?

Thanks so far, I am thinking of just asking a local smith to do it for me.

Do you know if VZ will do it?

I think Colt's just don't look right without them.

Yeah, I was thinking of purchasing from AJAX. You have had business with them before?

Some glue might be good to keep the medallion in place, but the post should be spread (like a rivet) on the back of the grip, which is what retains the medallion. You then would grind off any excess above the plane of the flat back of the grip to avoid interfering with the magazine. I like the gold medallions on my Colt Government models - I haven't seen a finish yet that I liked the silver medallions with, not even nickel or stainless. Just a personal preference. I searched for about a year for the set of very dark 'mottled' cocobolo fully-checkered grips with gold medallions that I have on one of them. http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb27/INLAND44/Guns/GM1953a1.jpg

Wow I was warned for this? All I wanted was to ask a question about COLT medallions for a COLT pistol. That's ridiculous. No offense to anyone.

Don't worry, The word will be passed on about how you guys treat your members.

Your question was about gun parts, not the (COLT) gun itself so it was moved to the correct forum.

Live and learn. Don't worry about it, everything's cool.

Most of us have done the same type thing and received a warning or an alert . Don't take it so hard , we all make mistakes . No one can see it but you and it'll be gone before you know it . Now , I just take them as friendly reminders to obey the rules , although at first I was pretty upset too ( very upset if the truth be known ) .

I see what your saying...Thanks for the reply.

Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to hijack my own thread.
