GI guide rod set-up.

Noobie question here, I love my PT1911 but I'm not too fond of the FLGR. Any suggestions for a GI guide rod and plug and can I use my old recoil spring or should I get a new one? Is this something I can install myself or do I need the services of a gunsmith? Thanks in advance!

Usually that's a do-it-yourself thing. Go to Brownells and get the equivalent Colt parts. For a 5" 1911 the recommended recoil spring is 16 lbs.

If you see the EGW guide rod and plug there, I'd get that. I installed them both without the smallest bit of work needed.

Some other manufacturers, though, claim that you need to be a gunsmith to install them, so I'd stick with the ones that make it like it right out-of-box.
