Put the barrel in the slide in battery without the recoil spring. The amount the barrel moves back and forth is the amount of loose breech you have. A new barrel is the way I would go.

So, is "loose breech" the same thing referred to in this Forum as "end shake"?

Are we talking about a short hood or battered upper lugs which would allow the barrel to slip back and forth in the slide? If so, then a new barrel if the slide lug recesses are okay, would be a good start.

I think end shake is a revolver term for the same thing, Neimi.

Hi Iron Bottom:

Thanx for the info. Just never heard that (loose breech) term used before. Now I can use the proper lingo.

Cheers

I remember talking to a gun store salesman about a used S&W 10MM revolver once. He was really talking that gun up until I slid the cylinder back and forth a few times to check the end shake. He knew a little, because when he saw me check for end shake (and the Smith had a bunch) he changed the subject rather quickly and put that Smith back in the case. :D

In my experience, loose breech has been used to describe problems with shotguns. This is the first time I've heard used to describe a problem with a pistol.

A loose BEACH is clothing optional right?

The Z,
A loose breech in a 1911?

Hood loose in the slide?

Don't be discouraged, we'll help once the jokes are done :)

Thanks for all the replies.

Think I have it figured out now. It is excessive fore and aft movement of the slide when it should be in battery. Usually means the hood is too short. Will try tiging the hood and milling to just clear breech face.
