I have a pre kahr 1911 AO. While final fitting A chip McCormic beavertail grip safety I noticed there was a gap almost .010 between the frame and plunger tube. on iside of frame PT does not appear to be staked.Am I right in assumeing the PT needs repair or replacement [which]?

Probably. There should be no gap.

I say - any play or looseness, replace and restake. If it feels rock solid and functions fine, I may just leave it.. or stake it properly if it'll make you feel better. Sometimes staking can be hard to see, or it may be a very tight interference fit. But then again from what I've read, PTs not being staked is not that unusual.
Also consider that if you do replace, and your slide stop and/or safety are dimpled for positive detent engagement, that they may not line up well with the plunger tube in .010 further, so some dressing of those dimples would be at least be in order. Or it's a good excuse for a new slide stop and safety ;)

thanks for the info .thumb safety rubs PT slide stop is sloppy so it all needs to be replaced anyway.
