Is there a way I can check to see if a person is a reliable gunsmith before I allow them to touch my precious Springfield Mil-Spec? I live in TN and the man is called Asherbranner in Gallatin. I wish I knew how to check him out to see...he is an excellent salesmen and is great as customer service and he even called all the way to California to find me the gun. He says he can do the work, I would just like to know if I could find out. Any help would definently be appreciated! Thanks a million.

That won't be construed as rude?

I've had folks do it with me. If he's a reputable 'smith he shouldn't have a problem. Most folks want to have their work seen. If he gets that bent out of shape, I think you'll have your answer. After all, its your money.

Ditto on the ref part. If he's good, he have customers that'll say so. You may also check to see if he is a member of the American Pistolsmiths Guild.

Seeing his work and hearing good things are probably the most reliable ways . Accreditation also helps but not always . I graduated from The Lassen program in the 80's and there were allot of good gunsmiths coming from there and unfortunately a few gunbutchers also . Guilds are also good but also not always foolproof , they usually just require you to submit an or some examples of your work and pay a fee . Who says he will spend as much time on your gun as the one he submitted , also maybe he didn't even make the gun he submitted

The references are a good idea also you could ask to see a diploma from the school he has been to(or look around his office it should be hanging up).
