Does anyone know how to do grip checkering?
I have a problem. I actually probably need more than just checkering, I think I also need to make a set of grips, but let me explain.
Since I can't afford a collection of genuine Colt 1911s like John Holbrook or Scott Gahimer, I have sort of embarked on a mission to accumulate a sort of "alternate" collection. I'm trying to get examples of things that are copies of Colt 1911s ... but cheap. One of the items I decided I "had" to have was one of those blank-firing 1911s that The Sportsmans Guide was selling a couple of years ago. They won't sell them to my state, but fortunately my sister lives in a state that they will ship to. I mentioned my dilemma to Sis, and when we got together for Christmas a year+ ago, I became the proud owner of an 8mm, blank-firing Italian replica of a 1911.
Visually, from a distance it isn't a horrible copy. But I had it out the other night and noticed (again) that the grips are really too thick, and two "rounded" at the shoulders. And they are smooth, not double diamond checkered. I would really like to be able to put on a set of authentic (appearing) double diamond checkered grips. Unfortunately, the spacing for the screw holes isn't the same as a real 1911, so I can't just slap on a set of real 1911 stocks.
Does anyone know of a source from which I could get stocks that are complete but without the holes? Or pre-shaped stock blanks that I could checker and drill myself?
Most importantly, assuming I have to make (or at least finish) my own, can someone explain to me how to do the checkering, or steer me to a link explaining how to do it?
Thanks.
BTW, here's what we're talking about:
