View Full Version : return to battery problem

Hello all !
When I first got my 1991 A1 Commander back in the winter the number of FTFs was concerning, and this problem has vanished after purchasing a couple of Tripps's mag. upgrade kits. Today, however, I put about 200 rounds of white box Winchester ball down range and had 3 failures to return to battery.
Hopefully I'm using the proper term here ... the rounds didn't jam - they just seemed to stop at the top of the feed ramp. Very slight pressure from my index finger was enough to move the slide fully into battery.
The gun is completely stock, it has what I believe is referred to as the "dimple" throat and only has about 600 rounds through it.
Thanks for any help !

Please explain exactly what position the round is in.
Where is the nose of the bullet, and where is the base?

Wichaka,
As I recall the situation I realize there was an error in my original post . :o
As best I recall, the slide only needed another inch or so of forward movement to fully return to battery which would mean the round was already on it's way into the chamber.
Sorry for the error on my original post. If this doesn't give you enough information I'll take my camera to the range next time and get some pics if it happens again.
Thanks,
Hersh

Make sure the feed ramp on the barrel is looking good and polished, as well as the chamber. Look at the edge where the ramp meets up with the chamber. It shouldn't be sharp. If it is, use some 600+ grit emory cloth and wrap it around a pencil and just take off the edge........no more.
Since your mags are new, I don't think we'll need to go there, Virgil puts out some great mags.........the only other thing would be the extractor needs to be adjusted.
Check out the tech section, there's a bit on extractors. Do the test to see if your's working properly.
Lastly, some guns just don't like to run very long without being cleaned. Some have tighter chambers, which clog up with residue faster making the gun do exactly what you describe.
Good luck!

... that after a long absence from the range I have good news !
I gave her a good cleaning, very lightly polished the feed ramp, bought two brand spankin' new McCormack 8-rounders and put 100 rounds of white box Winchester FMJ downrange today without the slightest hiccup ! 'Also shot a couple mags of Speer 185gr. GDHP with no issues.
This makes the total round count about 700 for my Commander and it looks as if my problems are over. Thanks to all for the suggestions !
