is there a definite way to shape a flat faced ejector tip in order to tune the direction the cases fly out? or does this not matter--the ejector tension be the problem?

we will say the firer is getting them in the forehead.

thanks

First of all, check to make sure that your extractor is NOT clocking (turning, inside its tunnel). Try to insert a case under the extractor claw and see if the extractor turns at all, at the rear of the slide. If it does, you need to get a new firing pin stop and fit it to your slide.

Second, if your extractor is not clocking, check out the article on how to install and tune your extractor. It describes a test that you can do to check your extractor tension.

Finally, here is an article that shows how to tune your ejector:

Hi B, Hi John,

I think it is a good question.
does the shape of the face of the ejector affect ejection.

the answer is Yes, BUT, not simple.

Lets take a little bit more complicated gun. 38 super with a scope mount over the ejection port.

The average gun we set up with the top of the ejectore rounded off about .020
the bottom cut away on a slight angle. the inside edge broken to guide the case out and to keep the ejector from setting off a live round when ejected from the gun after firing a stage.

You than run into a gun that does not work with that kind of set up.
so we change the contact point.
what we did was make an ejector kit.
one hits at the top, one at the bottom and one in the middle.

on a problem gun we plug and play ejectors till we find one that works best, clears the port and scope mount.

Like John mentions above, part of ejection is based on the extractor, tension, distance from bolt face. if the extractor 'clocks" shape of the hook ect.

on a 45 the ejection port also comes into play, is the case hitting the port on the way out, is it popping out the top or in the middle? the port from the bottom of the slide shold probably be in the .450 range on a 45.

On a short gun make sure the Recoil spring is fresh also. this can come into play.
