i was fitting a new beavertail to a remington rand today, gun was nickled so i wanted to swap some black parts to make it look better with the black beavertail. i found one of my usgi thumb safetys wont click up when installed on that gun (works fine on otheres both usgi and not) why would that thumb safety not work right on that particular gun?

While some thumb safeties might be interchangeable, it is a fitted part. As you surely know the thumb safety works by blocking the sear in the cocked position and due to different tolerance stacks of the sear, sear nose and hammer hooks this one doesn't and needs to be fitted. A properly fitted thumb will not allow the sear to move at all, and I suspect some that seem to work without fitting do allow a little movement.

Yes, I learned that first hand myself. Specifically with a new sear, the thumb safety no longer fit snugly and properly.
