My father brought me this 1911 a little while back and we have many conflicting thoughts on how old and what it is exactly. So I'm looking for the help of the local experts.
so anything is more then I know now.

serial # 268671 - c

one side of the slide says Colt's MFG. CO. Hartford CT. U.S.A.

the other Government Model Colt Automatic caliber .45 with horse stamp

Grips were diamond cut black plastic.

Proofhouse.com says 1954.
I have a nickel .38 Super of that year but not in nearly as nice condition.

It is 1954.....for more information, it would probably do better in the correct Commercial Government section.

The grips are aftermarket, of course, and the nickeling looks a little aftermarket from here...

Thank you for the information so far, The grips were put on by me, the originals were dry and cracked, they were just diamond cut black and had seen better days.

bgiven: I may just be blind I did not see anything for "Commercial Government section." Is there a way the thread can be moved there or would I just have to wait and repost?

anyone want to take a very rough stab on a value just so I can get some peace of mind it was a good deal?

Thank you again so far for all the information.

We have an area for pre-war Commercial Colts, but 1954 is post-war, so I took the liberty of moving the thread to the "Colt" discussion area.
