View Full Version : XSE Commander needs custom work?

I have a XSE LtWt Commander that has recently moved up to being my main carry pistol and the front serrations and sharp edges on the slide are eating away at my leather holsters.
What are some ways to fix this little problem and what custom shops to you suggest handle the job?
Thanks

A dehorn does help.
My advice is either the Colt Custom Shop or John Harrison.

I'll second, Robert.
I had the Custom Shop dehorn one of my Colts and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

Thanks for the help, any ideas on how I get in touch with the Colt Custom shop? Their website is not the best in the world. :butthead:

Customer service can give you a quote too.
I've never had any luck getting Joe on the phone.

Yeah, that maybe his best bet.

My friend DuckRyder gives great advice.
I would further that by saying for the price of a phone call or email you could call John Harrison and discuss the possibilities and pricing. I believe you would get more "personalized" service from John, and it never hurts to have a relationship with a world-class gunsmith for future wants and needs, especially if you ever intend to expand your collection or have ever dreamed of a true custom pistol, made to your specific wants and needs.
It's hard to go wrong either way, just my dos centavos.
Good luck.

That's odd, I did on several occasions when they had my M1991A1.

I am not knocking the Custom shop, they did an "O" package for me and I was happy with the work.
I wanted my Super .38 LTW commander done to basically match, but Paul (in CS, not the shop foreman) said he didn't know if they could dehorn an aluminum frame, and didn't think they could re-anodize it black (I want a black pistol.) Suggested I speak with Joe. I left a detailed voice mail, and waited about a week with no return call. I called back and left another detailed message without a return call. I left a third message about a month later without a return call. At that point I spoke to Carol who said that they could re-anodize the frame and do the dehorn and gave me a price. I don't recall if I ever did get a definite answer as to whether they would do the frame black (like the new agent).
I feel quite certain that had I sent it in with a detailed letter I would have gotten a call with the answers, but just wasn't ready to unless I knew I could have it my way.
I've had John do a number of small jobs for me and he always makes you feel like the most important customer even if he is only replacing a front sight. He is a true gentleman and does great work.
Again, I am not knocking Colt, Carol in particular is always very nice and the pistol that I had the "O" package on was completed to my satisfaction at a very fair price and returned within the time frame I was quoted.
Having Colt do the dehorn would be a simple matter of calling to get a quote, sending it in with a money order and letter and waiting for it to come back. They are pretty conservative in their communication practices and modifications.
If I wanted another "O" package done I wouldn't hesitate to use the Colt Custom shop, but If I wanted something more custom (Like a beaver tail, dehorn, front strap and slide serrations and ion bonding to a ltw commander) I would go with John without question.

My experience calling Colt Custom Shop is same as Duck Ryder's. I thought it was in part due to the fact that I'm in Pacific Time Zone and a three hour difference, but then maybe not...
DuckRyder - so, Ion Bond is a go with alloy frame? I'm thinking of that (and a few other things) for a LW Commander (sorry for hijack).

I was also unable to reach/talk to anyone at the repair/custom shop at Colt several years ago.
And, that was with a gun they looked at.
