I have had a on again off again love for Colts for many years. I have kept a 70 series around for years, but not as my main pistol.
With the advent of the Series 70 reproduction I have once again come back.
After buying one last year I have sold my Glocks, most Springfields, and some other "stuff" to provide much needed capital to finance some more Colts.

I for sure going to pick up another of the 70 repro's, but then my problems start. I must confess one reason for my straying was I do not like the FPS. All this leads up to this. I have always wanted a Gold Cup. Now I have the money, but alas no non-FPS new Gold Cups. So, do I bite the bullet and just buy a new Gold Cup?

I have looked at some originals and it will take most of my "stash of cash" to buy a good one. Or I can take a 70 series and send it off to a gunsmith for a re-work to provide the accuracy I am hoping with a new Gold Cup.

So, is a new Gold Cup worth it?

I like the Gold Cups, nice gun for the price. I don't care about the FPS. Never had an issue or heard of any issues with it. They have been selling guns many years with it. And if there were that many issues or problems, it would have changed long ago. I think if you were buying guns for years, then Colt added it you feel it was "imposed" upon you. My first 45 and everyone since, has had it, so I don't care. It's a personal preference. If you don't like it go with the 70. From what I have read here, some of the series 70 repros shoot just as well, or better then the gold cups.

I think it really depends on what you're going to use it for. Is it for target? Do you need the adjustable sights?

Buy the Gold Cup. THere's absolutely no FPS related problems except maybe during a detail strip, you have a couple more small parts. You can always leave those parts out and replace them with a shim from Bownells. :)

I would try and handle one in person and see if the duckbill GS fits your hand well. The firing pin safety is not a issue to be concerned with.

OK, are the Gold Cups more accurate?

And yes, I did sort of feel like it was forced on me.

I recommend an original MK IV Series 70 Government Model in excellent condition. Mine is the most accurate of my Colt .45s. They still can be found for less than $1K. If you get a 70 repro, it won't have the FPS but it also won't have the collet bushing which was instrumental in the original's accuracy. You can have a solid bushing fitted which will accomplish pretty much the same thing. If nothing will do but a GCNM, you can probably find a decent MK IV Series 70. I think now is one of the best times to buy premium guns in many years if you have cash.

I have a new last year stainless Gold Cup Trophy and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it did not include the tiny lever/spring assembly on the sear that I'd grown to dislike with my pre-seventy and seventy series Gold cup or National Match.

Sure, the new one has the FPS but those parts are a comparative piece of cake to keep track of and reassemble. Does it effect the trigger noticably? No, it does not.

The new pistol is easily more accurate than the 70 series Gold Cup. More accurate than the older national match?.........Maybe not, but it's close enough that my no longer competing self can't be sure of a difference.

Well,

I went to buy the Gold Cup, but, stopped by another gun shop on my way to Cabela's and a 1977 vintage Colt Combat Commander in really good condition jumped out at me.
Since I know that I can still pick up the Gold Cup easily, it was a no brainer to grab the CC while it was in front of me.

For me it was special since 1977 is the year I bought my first Combat Commander. That one was 9mm, but this one is close enough to make me happy.

pictures soon.......

The series 70 GCNM is most often found with a collet bushing versus the originals solid style bushing and most all of the ones I have don't have a very well fit barrel or bushing. Ditto on the series 80 guns. The early GCNM was a nicely fit gun, I've rarely had one that didn't shoot quite well.
The new ones seem to be fit better than anything I've handled since the pre 70 series guns.
If it's a GC you want then hand pick a new one with a good solid fit on the barrel and you'll probably be quite happy with it.

Hello Joni,

I am thinking of getting a new O5070X GCT. I really like your suggestion of picking up a few and see which one feels nice and tight. Only one problem, none of my local gun shops have any. All I have gone to, I walk in, ask for a O5070X GCT, they run to the phone, come back and say " I can get one of those in a couple of days. This is in a 75 mile area. What would you suggest to do? No way for me to compare more than one side by side. Suggest any other model weapons to compare to?

Thank you,
Monnie

New here, so I thought I'd just jump in.

I just picked up a VERY nice 70 series GCNM on Gunbroker. Very few rounds fired thru it in its life. Very happy with it. Shoots way better than me and it was way less than the ones with paper and box etc. I plan to shoot it not look at it!
