Here are a couple of stages from yesterday's match. Whew, my tac reloads are still ugly!

Well done, Hersh. I'm impressed by your weak hand shooting.
Tac reloads are pretty much always ugly. It's awkward no matter how it's done. And in some ways, I think IDPA has it wrong. Tac reloads aren't always a good idea.
When I took a class from Louis Awerbuck, he mentioned that he was not a fan of the tactical reload. In his view, if you need to reload during the festivities, you need to do so as quickly as possible, i. e., a speed reload. In his view, a tac reload is appropriate only under two circumstances: (1) you're with a group who can provide suppressive fire while you do a tac reload; or (2) there's a lull in the activities.
But IDPA rules are what they are.
Again, well done.

Frank Course designors are encouraged not to specify Tac Re-loads and Reloads with Retention to be done on the clock in IDPA. Page 41 of the Rule Book. The Tac Reload and Reload with Retention are interchangeable and one can substitute the other freely. Where possible most of us opt to shoot until we are dry and do an Emergency Reload.
The shooter has the choice of reloads and also when he does them.

That seems more consistent with current thinking among tactical instructors, at least in my recent training experience.

That is the one large problem I have with the IDPA, I train using speed reloads almost exclusively and I think I've actually become kind of fast. Then I go to the weekly Fight Night comp using IDPA rules and stages and Im thrown into things like that that frankly don't make a lot of sense. I really don't want to work on all of the different kinds of reloads because I would much rather be good at one than OK at three or four.

Total agreement here. In fact, I would say that speed reloads are taught incorrectly in most circumstances. In a real fight, there is too much chance for fumbling and leaving you with a single shot pistol.
I prefer the method in this video:

You are confusing IDPA with Tactical Training. IDPA is a sport with rules not Tactical Training just like IPSC/USPSA. Think of it as a formal adult version of kids playing war with imaginary Bad Guys you are on the right track, only with rules.
If you are shooting IDPA, thinking it is Tactical Training you are mistaken.
