Is there a definitive book or CD that one can purchase not only the history of the 1911 pistol, but all makes, models, up to today. (or at least the Colt) Field stripping and general gunsmithing issues for all of them? Thanks.

The Ron Phillips ( Wilson Combat ) Disassembly & Assembly of the 1911 DVD is the best I've seen on how to completely disassemble the 1911 . It's about 45 minutes of hands on instruction .

You won't find a book that included everything up to and including today.
Check out any of the books by Charles Clawson. History of the 1911 up to the Series 70. But that's as far as it goes,
For 'smithing.....Kunhausen Manuals, Brown's Bench Reference, and the one mentioned above.

Check out any of the books by Charles Clawson. I was shocked when I found the book Colt 45 Service Pistols: Models of 1911 and 1911A1 by Charles W. Clawson for " only " $798.99 . His books must all be collector only books . I'd be afraid to start reading a $798.99 book much less buy it .

There is a recent book that would seem to fit your bill, note the previous thread.

The very best book for collecting the M1911 and M1911A1 pistols is Charles Clawson's Collectors Guide. Be sure you get the 3rd Edition published in 2003 or 2004.
The book is out of print, but still available through Karl Karash at kxk1@juno.com
If you have trouble contacting Karl, feel free to contact me. I'll hook you up.

I received The Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 Military and Commercial Pistols by Joe Poyer last week and it's a interesting read so far . It's worth checking out .
