I am going to buy a 1911 for a retirement gift for someone who has 20yrs AF and 4+ yrs Army time. I have read about Kimbers and Paras but the Colt seems like the logical choice. The recipient would probably use it in a little competition, more range, and maybe carry. Since he can by his own carry I think the 5" would be a good choice. Now the question, What model?

Look @ the Special Combat Government. It's the current Colt flagship.

Welcome to the forum, ew1911. :wc:

The sights are very small, but the O1918 seems to be a very well put together handgun. I have the carbonia blue one and it's a very fine pistol. If any real target shooting were going to be done, you might want to change the sights, but for IDPA type competition, it might be fine the way it is.

Depending on your budget, it's rumored that GunsiteGS (www.gunsite.com) has a few of their limited production Colt 1911s available at I think around $1500. I'm not sure that they're technically any better than any of the other higher end production Colts, but they are hard to find and sought after as a semi-custom Colt. If you're not aware, Gunsite is a civilain-run, weapons training academy in Prescott, Arizona.

I would also think the Special Combat Government would be a good choice or maybe the Gold Cup Trophy.
Welcome to the forum, I agree that Colt is the logical choice.

Welcome to the forum EW, the Special Combat Gov't has been on my to get list for a looooooooooooong time. I've seen the blue/nickel model and it's very striking in appearance.

Since your bud has served in both the Air Force and Army, does that make him an "Angel Grunt"??? :lh:
