I bought this gun as a project gun because I wanted to learn how to do things myself. I figured it was a cheap pistol (bought it used) that i could dispose of if I messed it up to bad. Boy was I wrong. There isn't a single gun I have I would keep over my rock island.

First I added a wilson combat beavertail safety, hammer, and trigger. Then I decided to add a set of sights. http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.php?t=50057 Here is the thread from that fiasco. The sights are kings combat sights. I found a guy to fix them and while he was waiting to blue some parts I decided to duracoat it myself instead. So here it is fresh out the oven(Yea the date on the camera is wrong)

Great looking lady!!!!! How hard was it to DuraCoat? I have been wanting to do the same type of do it yourself project with a RIA 4" Midsize. Any recomendations?

Thank you all for the kind words.

Raptor, the duracoating was super easy. It was my first time using an airbrush. I sanded with 600 grit sandpaper, degreased with non-chlorinated brake cleaner, sprayed, and then baked for 1 hour or so at about 200 degrees. The baking is optional but I am suprised at how little the fumes were in the oven. Definately better for me since I can put it together in an hour instead of a day plus they say it is more durable when you bake it, or so I have heard.

great work! i like the black/od/black look, quite nice. and those sights are beefy - looks like you could open a bottle with 'em! hope you opened up the frame's trigger opening enough: my coated trigger started to wear in two strips at the top and bottom of the left side. i still have to smooth out the trigger opening and give the trigger block another light coat (or blast it and redo it).

and... moved to the gunsmithing thread? really? most moves seem quite reasonable, but this is a finished custom project, not a step-by-step or request.

well, at least more people will see the nice work!

before this I was never a fan of "colored" guns, make mine blued, parkerized, or stainless but I've got to say your gun is beautiful. you did a fantastic job, you should be proud.

For a do it yourself job...you've done great!! Now tell us if that great look translates to a good shoot.

Even if it doesn't translate to a good shot, at least it will look good shooting bad. I have always shot it good slow fire with the gi sights but hopefully the new sights will help get me on target a little faster.
