View Full Version : Going off half-cocked?

I have a Colt M-1991 A1 that was set up like a race gun(Nowlin 3-port comp. bbl., tons of Wilson combat extras, etc.) Most original parts were with it, so now it's back to stock. The problem is, on half-cock, the safety slips into the "safe" detent on the slide. Take safe (off?) and stroke the trigger ; CLICK!!! I don't think something is quite right (sear, maybe?) Other than that it shoots just great. If I sell it I don't want a mate of mine to be surprised. Or, is it just plain worn? Any skinny would really help. TY

When a 1911 hammer is at the half-cock position, the safety should not be able to move at all, if properly fitted.
I'm guessing when returning the gun to stock, you put the old safety back in, but left the non-stock sear? If so, the thumb safety will need to be fitted to the sear that's in the gun.

I put the stainless wilson amby. thumb safety back on and it WON'T slip into slide detent. Why, though, if I click to fire it still drops the hammer from half-cock? No old sear with original parts. You know your stuff. TY.

It sounds like it has a newer style hammer that does not have a captive half-cock notch. If this is the case, and I'm betting that it is..........no need to worry, its normal with that type of hammer.

Thanks again for all the help. I guess I'll just make it smoke like before I started to stress over it.
