Hello gents,

Had a couple of my 1911’s out to the range today – my new RIA Gov’t model and my Springfield WWII Gov’t model.

Both ran 100% with approx 200 rounds each and needless to say, both are a joy to shoot.

But . . I had one minor problem.

With the Springfield, every now and then I was hit on the top of my head with an ejected case. Pistol feeds, fires and ejects 100% - except the occasional fired case that wants to land on my head. Most cases land slightly to my right.

This Springfield has the small size ejection port (WWII model). Extractor tension seems to be correct and the ejector is the factory installed one.

So . . . any ideas on what to do ? ? Getting hit on the head with an empty case during a serious “social event” could really be a big problem ! !

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks ! !

Are they falling from on high, or going bang-splat? BTW, on top of the head is better than down the shirt, and much better than behind the glasses. Did you happen to have saved any of these cases which hit you? What ammo were you using. And .... how many did you fire before the cases liked you?

Usually it's the last round in the magazine.

The case has no support from below and tends to drop down some before ejector hits it. So it flies out differently.

My last empty goes way up and back, about 5, 6 o'clock.

This is generally indicative of a weak mag spring.

So, what's your problem? It's a 1911, don't forget, it was designed to do that, the first operators always had a helmet on!! :p

Jokes apart, if it is not always the last round in the mag that does it, then most probably it's your extractor clocking (i.e. turning inside its tunnel). Try to push the rim of a round under the extractor claw on the breech face and watch the rear of the slide to see if the extractor turns. If it does, a new oversized firing pin stop will stop it.

That's provided the extractor tensions is OK.
