hey guys,

i have been reading this site for quite some time now. i recently bought a pt1911 at a very good price and it has been absolutely problem free. i have been shooting this thing almost three time a week religiously. i have a question regarding the slide release. the edges on it seem a little sharp and it has been scratching the first joing of my thumb, so i ordered a Colt slide release that seems to be a little better finished. i have installed it on the gun but, it locks back the slide on every round fired. i put about 100 rounds trying to see if it would loosen up a little but it did not. is there any grinding or cleaning of the part to clean it up.

thank you

The usual cause of this problem is the part of the slide stop (release) that protrudes inside the frame protrudes in too far. It then gets pushed up by the nose of the cartridges in the magazine and locks the slide back.

You should be able to see evidence on cartridge contact on this part of the slide stop.

The cure is to slowly and carefully remove metal just from the area of contact until there's no more contact. There's a blueprint of the slide stop in our Tech Issues section.

A handload with a round nose bullet not seated deeply enough could also be the culprit, so make sure this is not the cause.

Or use a file to remove the sharp corners from your original slide stop, and then use some cold blue to refinish it. Cheaper, quicker.

This one's really easy to see. Remove the slide and insert the slide stop and a mag with 1 round in it. The bullet should clear the slide stop. Remove the round and insert the empty mag and see how much contact is made between the follower and the stop. Do not remove that much, eh?
