View Full Version : Modern sear or parts put in a USGI or early Commercial

I'm planning to change out some small parts on a US&S and a 1947 Colt Government Model Commercial to assure safety of use, actually initially the sear first. I'm just wondering if the presumably harder modern steel of the current sears will end up damaging the stock hammers on the guns as the difference in hardness might round off the square corners of the hammer hooks or do any other damage. Am I correct? I might also swap out the pins and the plunger assembly. Will I do damage to the thumb safety and the slide stop? Thanks so much.

What leads you to doubt the "safety of use" of the factory sears?

I would leave the US&S alone, it is the second lowest production 1911A1 and if in decent shape is of considerable interest to collectors and speculators. One Internet Expert warned against substituting parts for shooting because the wear patterns would be changed and look hokey when you went to sell the gun.

I don't know if a 1947 G.M. is a big dollar gun. On the other hand I don't doubt the quality of its parts.

Promiscuous changing of parts would require refitting. I would not fool with it.

Hello Jim. Thanks for the reply, good point. It's just that I saw that the sear was rounded on the nose in the 1947 Commercial. Would probably leave the US&S alone though. Just toying with the idea right now as I do plan on using these guns, just a hundred or so rounds a year though. I do appreciate the history of the guns but I think the essence of these guns are that they are to be used and not just stored. As long as they are not abused though, that's going overboard. ;)

Thanks Jim.
