View Full Version : What is this Magazine?

I am new here, so please bear with me. I have an old M1911A1 that I got when my dad passed away, and it has this magazine in it. I know it is probably not the right one for this gun, but I think it might be an early one known as the 'keyhole mag'. It has a little surface rust on the right side, and it is hard to tell what used to be blued. Can you tell if it is authentic, and a possible value? Thanks so much.

Looks like a WW1 type mag(lanyard loop on bottom).Since you can post pictures , if you show the gun I'll bet some of these guys could be of more help than me.I thought these were supposed to be two tone and I have seen lanyard loop mags priced from 75.00 and up at gun shows.Hope I have been of some help.

Shows a keyhole magazine. Perhaps it's just the picture but the hole looks misshapen and the slot a little wide.

Thanks for that info. Here are a couple more images a little closer. I put some gun oil on the magazine and it really cleaned up well.

A fellow collector provided this excellent picture of two of his keyhole magazines.

Thanks for all of the info, guys. And a special thanks to Doran for coming up with the good pictures. I am going to assume that my magazine is probably an original, although I wish it were a little cleaner and showed it being half blued and half not. Has anyone run across the fakes and knows what to look for in them? Once again, many thanks and I would like to say that this whole forum is spectacular in providing information.

Well, the two excellent magazines above also don't appear to be two-toned, so why should yours be?

Good point, 1saxman. I keep reading as much as I can and it seems that most people make a big case about the magazine being half blued and half not. Maybe the earlier ones were all the same color. That's just a guess on my part.

Original keyhole magazines have two tone finish. The furnished picture only shows the upper part of the magazines, the blue portion is out of the picture.

My friend provided a side view of the magazines.

Well now - there you have it. Your mag has been re-blued. If you really want the two-tone look, take the follower and spring out, wash the mag with soap and water, then dip the top third in any rust-remover liquid. The blue will disappear on the dipped section. The previous pictures of the two keyhole mags faked me out - they both looked blued to me (worn).

I could do that, 1saxman, but I really prefer to keep everything as original as possible. This mag looks as if all bluing has been worn off. You have to remember that if it is an original, it would be 95-96 years old. Also, are you the person who has a Remington Rand, or knowledge about them? If so, I may have some original parts that might be of interest.
