I just inherited a Remingto Rand 1911A1 from my Father who brought it home from the Korean war. I have been doing some research on it to try and learn about its history as well as determine its value. According to the Blue Book of Gun Values and a couple of websites the serial number for this gun does not make sense. The number is 1724220. Can anyone help me?
What doesn't make sense? That serial# is from 1944.
1944 1743847-1816641 Remington Rand 72,795 made

1724220 is not between 1743847 and 1816641
Duh. :o
I read your number wrong, you have a Colt receiver.

Left side aft of the trigger will be FJA for Remington Rand or GHD for Colt. You must have GHD.

I do have a GHD thank you for the info. What is the most likely explanation for this? What is the effect of this on the value? According to the Blue Book grading pictures this gun is arround 95%. The Slide and frame appear to have the same amount of wear.

What is the most likely explanation for this?
The most likely explanation is that it's a rebuild. If it doesn't have any arsenal markings, it could still have been rebuilt at the unit level on an ad hoc basis by a unit armorer who pulled parts from different pistols to make one that worked.
