My search for an OK price on a pre-series 70 Combat Commander in 9mm has turned out to be a longer process than I first had thought. To tide me over, I jumped a decent deal on this S70 MK IV Government in 9mm:

It seems to be in OK shape. It is in need of a good cleaning. I haven't decided wether to turn it into a shooter or not, probably will though.
I am brand new to Colts, so I don't know too much about this one. It appears to be stock (to me). If there is a site to look up this gun up can someone please post a link? I would appreciate any info.
I am excited to strip this down and give it a much needed cleaning tonight. I may throw up a couple more pics later as well. Hopefully this Colt gets along OK with the rest of the stable. Not too worried though.

VERY NICE Moyler! That's a beauty. Excellent first Colt! Love the 1970's rollmarks.
Per proofhouse, it appears to have been made during the first year of GM 9mm production, in 1972.

On the right-hand side, scroll down to the subheading "Colt Semi-Auto Pistols", then "Model 1911 9mm Commercial".

That is a beautiful Colt, you should be proud.
If it were mine (as I am wishing it was) I would have to shoot it but for sure would never put it in a holster.

I wanted one a bit ago. I had a conversion made on 1 of my Super 38's and I bought a Colt 9mm Conversion slide. I would have preferred to just buy a 9mm Colt outright, but you can't buy one new right now because Colt isn't making them. Maybe next year or the year after......

Great find, Moyler! You're on a roll now, and Eli's beer turned green right in front of him. :)
....it was actually more of an asparagus, but the effect was still the same :( :D.
BTW Moyler, it's a 1972 manufactured pistol, in case you hadn't found it out yet.
(asparagus??...........yuch) :)

Give it a good cleaning and go shoot it !
I would not change a thing on that pistol. She's already a 'shooter'.
To tide me over, I jumped a decent deal on this S70 MK IV Government in 9mm.
Very nice "tide me over" Beautiful, congrats!

How much you get her for? The trigger doesn't look stock.

Speaking of asparagus! A most under-rated member of the Lily family. I picked up some excellent recipies for grilled asparagus in the Baer forum, via Frank, Tim and Ping. Add a nice Rib-eye and... Well, anyway...
Thanks for the kind replies everyone! That is a useful link Eli, thanks for posting it.
After a field strip and clean, some grease and lube, I decided to shoot it some. This is the first Colt I have held than didn't have night sights and a beavertail added, or grip tape or hand checkering and a skeleton trigger. It was a pleasure to shoot a bone-stock, straight shooting Colt. Also, the 5" 9mm makes for a real soft shooter. I picked out a nice new gun rug and headed home happy for another cleaning. I wanted to add, I was quite surprised to find how tightly the collet barrel bushing is fitted. It's easy to respect a 36 year old piece of 1911 history, this is a fun gun to admire as well as shoot.
And I must be living right, (or wrong, depends who you ask) 'cuz I just coulda', mighta', maybe found the Combat Commander I was originally after!! I thought to myself, "what would Hill do???" The safe needs some balance anyway, as my 45's are giving the new Colt grief for wielding an inferior size round. With any luck the Cavalry might be on the way!

I probably over paid a couple hundred, but I have seen them selling on different web-sites for a couple hundred more than I paid. How's that for skirting the question?
May I ask what gives clue to a replaced trigger on this gun? I am just curious, and far, far from an expert on these guns.
Thanks!~

Asparagus IS a highly underated food ;).
I think that the trigger is original (but i'm far from being an expert myself).
Moyler, i think you probably better buy that Commander to keep the other guns happy ;). BTW, I also use the lithmus test of "what would Hill do?" :D.

Maybe I'm wrong but I didn't think Colt used aluminum triggers for those pistols.

It's especially good when served with a nicely seared porterhouse or ribeye from Allen Brothers and wearing a little hollandaise! YUM!
With the cost of 45 ammunition now, the 9mm is becoming my friend. I prefer the 45, but it sure is getting expensive to shoot.

Kid, i was checking out photo's from gunbroker, looking for original/NIB models:

Someone else will know the facts of when and what better than I'd try to pretend to know, but the transitions to the 70 series guns did bring several variations of grip and triggers so I don't think that an aluminum trigger here is surprising. What did surpeise me is the uncheckered grips as I'd previously thought that those were restricted to Commander models as a distinctive characteristic. After looking around a bit, and in light of Eli's great GB research results I wouldn't worry over that trigger.
This is not to say that I wouldn't want to change the trigger. Aluminum bright metal triggers, with holes or without, are one of my petty annoyances. Colt might have thought that they look OK, but I don't. FWIW.
What's this "What would Hill do" nonsense??

I thought the same thing about the grips; usually seeing them only on satin nickel Commanders.
AFAIK the S70 transition did bring about a number of changes in Colt components and variation which may account for the grips. If you look at the first GB link, that model has the same stocks.

Glad to help! I'm still not absolutely certain about the trigger, but i'd make an educated guess that it's stock.
