I broke down and bought a Colt :D . Bought a new Defender Saturday and just got to shoot it today. I'm thinkin' I'm gonna be mighty fond of it.

I changed out the Hogue grips & put on a pair of double diamond. I like these better. The gun shoots great. No problems in it's first 100 rounds of Wally World white box, or the few Remington hollow points I got by mistake. Look forward to putting more through it.

I sure hope that you have better luck with yours than I've had. Just shipped mine back to Colt yesterday to see if they can make it function. I bought it new about three months ago and have put about 700 rounds through it with only minor improvement in function. It continues to lock-up solid as it gets a round about 2/3 of the way into the chamber. I have to drop the mag and rack the slide to get the weapon to free up. Before breaking it in to this extent, the slide would lock-up about 1/4" before returning to battery when it was released slowly from a rearward position; and this was empty with no magazine in place. I think I got a real lemon here.

I sure hope Colt stands by their warranty and gets it running right. I like the size and weight of the weapon. It seemed accurate enough with the shots I fired through it. Reading the glowing reviews on this and a couple other forums, I thought I was doing good picking one up. Oh well...we'll see what happens.

Y'all are most kind in your comments. Were the picture better, I would have called it "American Classics"... Colt, Buck, and Kaywoodie. The KW is a 50's era pipe.....

Hank, I'm sorry to hear this. I don't have one of those but I've seen that some people decide to change the recoil system to one that's more traditional. Seems to me that there was a long thread, possibly started by Eli, a member here, on alternative ways to assure that issues don't arise.
FWIW now, the shortened versions of 1911 are somewhat more difficult to set up to be reliable because of the reduced operating range of movement. It's not necessarily a price that owners HAVE to pay for the added carryability of the smaller pistols but it does seem to be one that requires adaptations from the as-issued state.

hopefully Colt will fix you up but if problems continue after you have the pistol back bring it up in the "gunsmithing" portion of this site and see if there isn't something that you can do to resolve the problem.

Thanks for the concern. I've gotta' admit that I'm less than impressed at the moment. All I wanted was a downsized 1911 for a lightweight CCW weapon. I know JMB made his great pistol to function as designed, and that any and all diversions from that design are destined for problems. The two full size 1911s that I own, a Combat Elite and a Les Baer TRS, are wonderful and reliable weapons. Hopefully Colt will address the issues with my Defender and make it reliable. Otherwise, I'll sell it for a loss to someone who has more patience and less expectations than myself. Anything other than reliability in a defensive arm just doesn't cut it for me.

My Defender had a couple FTF in the first 50 or 100 rounds or so and then was 100% to its current 3K+ round count. I stopped carrying it because I live in a more rual environment and a Colt Commander makes more sense for me.
