View Full Version : slide damage from magazine?
Hello! This is on a Sistema pistol, any ideas on a cause and solution for this? It appears to me the damage is where the magazine protrudes from the magwell. I have inspected my magazines and do not notice any damage or wear. Thank you!

Not sure what it came from, but it's not the mag, as the slide does not go that far forward to have the damage so close to the disconnect notch.........when it's properly attached to the slide.
So unless the slide was placed on the frame and something rammed up the mag well, or somethng hit the disconnect rail while the slide was in the position that it is now.........hard to say.

The only things which normally contact the disconnector rail are the disconnector, hammer and top round in the magazine.
The only one of these three wide enough to make contact with both edges of the disconnector rail is the hammer.
Not sure how the hammer could make marks like those, but examine its face closely for roughness and burrs.

Hammer impact. Weak mainspring or something binding within the mainspring housing channel...spring or cap...or possibly the hammer strut.
I can see evidence of the hammer's point of impact getting progressively further forward...starting at the disconnect's slot.
When the hammer is cocked, it gets slammed backward...bounces off the grip safety tang...and back to the slide's center rail. In a healthy pistol, the impact area is near the rear of the rail, and normally at the junction of the firing pin stop and the rear edge of the rail.

New mainspring. Check for unimpeded travel of the mainspring cap. Look for indication of hard contact on the strut. I've seen a few old pistols with bent struts that caused weird things to happen...up to and including slowing the hammer's fall so much that it caused failure to fire.
Thanks for the quick replies!
The hammer does not appear to have any unusual wear, the mainspring does not appear to be binding, and the hammer strut does not appear damaged when I compare it to my springfield.
I am going to order a new mainspring from wolf. Just checking but do I want 23#?
Do I need to attempt to repair the damage that has been done? Thanks!

The hammer won't show peening damage from slide impact. It's a little harder than the slide.

Yup.
Do I need to attempt to repair the damage that has been done?
Just dress it a little with a smooth file or a stone...lightly. No need to try to make it look "right" again. Hit the high spots.

Here's a shot of the normal catch point for the hammer. This is an older, "soft" USGI slide, and isn't as evident on hardened slides...though it'll show up with enough use.
It takes a long time, though. Depending on the age of your Argentine, it may or may not have a soft slide...but my guess is that it doesn't.
It shows pretty quickly in Series 80 Colts when the hammer hits at the disconnector slot due to the thin steel on the side where the plunger is adjacent to the slot.
Picture too big. Here's the link. Click to enlarge.

23# mainspring ordered from wolff, thanks for the help! I will let you know how it goes once I get her fixed up!
