I am looking at purchasing a Colt Combat Commander 38 Super Pre Series 80 pistol. The serial number prefix is "80B". I'm assuming this is one of the last Pre Series 80 pistols made during the transition to Series 80. Does anybody know when these transitional pistols were made or how many have this transitional serial number? I am thinking there may not be too many of them, especially in 38 Super. I plan on calling Colt tomorrow but I thought I would ask here also. I don't have any pictures right now but if I purchase it I will post some. Thanks for your help.

1982 is what I'm thinking also. I have seen several 9mm's and 45's with transitional serial numbers but this is the first 38 Super I have come across. Unfortunately it doesn't have the original box but is a beautiful pistol in a cartridge I really like. I'm looking forward to getting it.

Landman - I wasn't aware of any Supers, Commander or otherwise, with the 80B prefix. Does it have the cut-outs but no small parts or is it free of all 80 Series "instances" and just the 80B prefix? I'll be interested to hear what Colt has to say about how many were made, not to mention seeing pics of a your .38 Super Commander. Good luck with your impending "adoption".

Paul,
I haven't had a chance to get my hands on it yet. I hate to admit it but I went ahead and purchased it based on a few pictures and the owner's description of it. I talked to him on the phone and he seemed like a very honest guy so I purchased it. I won't receive it until Friday probably. I'll keep you informed as to what I find out and will post pictures later.
Thanks,
Mike

Congrats Landman! That'll be one fantastic Commander! I'm green with envy ;). Looking forward to pics.
Btw, i'm fairly certain 1982 is the last year of the pre-series 80's.

1980 was the first year for 80B serial numbered blued Combat Commanders. As for nickel, they stayed with a 70SC number for a few years more.

My pistol came in and I wanted to ask some questions about it so I started a new thread with pictures. The link to it is below. Thanks.
