I installed a new wilson A-2 sear and ultra-lite hammer in my gov. model and of coarse had to re-fit the thumb safety which was stainless. A few months later I decided to install an Ed Brown tactical safety, also stainless, and the metal compaired to the colt was much softer and easier to file. point...nothing like genuine colt parts.

Yup, I have noticed the same with many aftermarket parts and parts on some other brands of 1911s over the years.

I agree it is hard to beat factory Colt parts (seems I have said that before):D

Any particular resource y'all can recommend to obtain genuine colt parts?
Besides calling Colt?

I have never ordered from them, but Specialized Armament lists genuine Colt parts too.

i cant say that i'm surprised to read this. i mean if you think about it, how much did we spend on our colts? and how much are some of our after market parts? +/- $20? $30 $40? the metal from colt better be top notch stuff for some of the prices they cost, same with other mfg's.

Personnaly, I think Colt pistols and parts are the standard other manufacturers are measured against. I wouldnt't hesitate (in fact I would prefer to) replace any parts in my pistols with genuine Colt parts. Unless it was a part not offered from Colt, like an aftermarket beavertail.

Guys what does "Slide ASSY" mean? I'm still looking where to find original Colt slide for my 1911. Is this it? I found it in Specialized Armament's site.

Usually ASSY mean the assembly, so I expect it to come with some extra goodies too, but probably you will have to take some of the parts off your old slide.

The only thing to keep in mind is that sometimes the roll marks will not match your original. So don't be disappointed if they don't.

I have read on a famous gunsmith's website that Colt has the best small parts of all manufacturers.

Nothing wrong with stating that Colt was using some MIM parts. It is a valid observation.

Most Colt parts are fine and true to spec.

I think C&S or Kings sells Genuine Colt Parts? Also there is an ex Colt employee that lives in CT that makes lovely Ivory grips and also sells Colt parts if memory is correct.

I have read on various forums that Colt does not manufacture their own parts and out-sources most of them. Is that true? Who are their suppliers?

If that is not true, please set me straight because I don't have a clue if that is correct or not.

Most Ed Brown and some Wilson parts are made by metal injection technology. I gave up on Ed Brown parts after a brand new thumb safety I was installing for a customer had the strong side thumb pad snap off. I then sent it back to the company for a replacement. I got a new part but I also got a scathing note from Ed's son saying they weren't in the warranty business and I should return parts in the future to whomever I bought them from. That finished me with anything Ed Brown. I won't use them or install them for customers.

Thanks for the Specialized Armament link. I hadn't heard of them before, and it's nice to have new suppliers for Colt parts. Has anyone done business with them before?

i'm surprised the Colt barrels are reasonably priced :appld: ....much much less expensive than some of the used prices on this forum.

The 'smith at Specialized Armament is a good fellow and old friend, Steve Morrison, not to mention that he's also an excellent Colt-trained, Colt-certified 1911-smith and AR-smith.
