View Full Version : Why is this hole drilled into the slide?

I asked this question elsewhere and after 105 hits on my post, no answer. I'll ask here too.

I had bought the M1911 you can see in my signature line and noticed a hole in the slide in the disconnect notch. Having never seen one before, I just chalked it up to "bubba" and never gave it another thought.

Now I've seen another. (This is not my pic and I wish I could remember who's it is so I could give credit.) Any help as to why this hole would be drilled?

I can take more pics of my own slide if needed.

All slides were made that way until 1937 serial 710001. See Clawson's little book, page 35.

The irony of the answer to my question is I am on page 30 of Clawsons. Only 5 pages from my answer.

Likely there as a tooling hole or to relieve material for the woodruff cutter that generates the slot.
