This is my first 1911 and also my first post here. I traded a Taurus PT111 plus some cash for this Colt Commander. I have wanted a 1911 for a while now and this deal pretty much fell in my lap.
I just finished up my first field stripping of the gun to give it a good scrubbing. It really was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be from everything I had heard.
I noticed that compared to the other handguns I have the sites seem a little strange on this one. On most of the others with dots when lining up the top of the front site post with the rear sites, the three dots will be straight across. On my Colt, the front site dot is so low that I can only see the top half if the tops are all aligned. Is this normal?
Also, is there anything I need to be looking for to make this thing better?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't have money for a good digital camera with all the guns still on my list to buy.... :D I'll see what I can come up with though...

As far as ammo, I think I'm going to have my dad teach me to reload.

2slow, is your commander blue or stainless?

Are the sights GI w/white dots or ramped w/ white dots? Not sure if the dots are right or not...does it show any sings of being worked on? Some front sights come in different heights and need to be mated with rear sights correctly.

Pics would help. Preston

ps...the more you shoot your pistol the better it will get. ;)

I assume your gun is new and the sights have never been modified. What model Commander did you get?

That may help us as Commanders come with different sights depending on what model Commander.

To answer the questions. It is used. I'm the 3rd owner from what I was told buy the person I bought it from. It is steel. The slide says "Colt's Commander Model .45 Automatic Caliber" on the left side and "-Series 80-" on the right side.

I am pretty sure it is exactly as it came from the factory. I don't see any signs of work.

To quote 2slow "I am pretty sure it is exactly as it came from the factory. I don't see any signs of work."

You'll enjoy your Colt's CC, over the years it will hold it's value :)

It looks to be like it came from Colt's...see if you can get any better pics...

When you shoot it it may be that the dots just don't line up. This is assuming a conventional six o'clock hold. I always have someone that I know is a good shooter shoot any firearm that I have a question or concern about.

I would encourage you to just shoot that CCC, learn reloading and what loads that pistol likes and then shoot it some more. Don't go making changes just because you can. JMHO, Best to you, enjoy that Commander, Preston

Thanks guys!
Preston, I'm usually the one in the group that they usually have shoot to see if it's the gun or the shooter. I've only put two mags through this one so far and it grouped fine from 20 yards. It would have been better I'm sure if I hadn't had too much coffee that day. If the rain holds off, I'm going to try to put a few more groups on paper this evening.
Thanks again!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new to you Colt Commander!

Shoot it some and then if you are really interested in reloading look at the Dillon and the Hornady Lock and Load. Since you have someone to teach you how to proceed, go ahead and try a progressive press. After that, put together enough money to buy another 1911 because you have to have 2 in case 1 stops working.
