New to this forum and am hoping for some help identifying a 1911. Me and my dad have shot the gun on and off ever since he bought it, usually a box or two every few years but I'm wondering now if we're better off leaving it in the gun cabinet.

Right side of the frame says 'United States Property M1911A1 U.S. Army'. NO 986xxx

Left side of the frame has a small 'FJA' stamping right below the slide lock. There's also a 'P' just behind the mag release.

Right side of slide has 'D84' stamped forward of the serrations, and on the left side it has Remington Rand Inc. Syracuse, NY USA

Field stripped it because I remember reading something about a barrel marking when I searched, but all it has is 'Colt .45 Auto' that matches up with the ejection port. I don't see any other markings anywhere else on any parts.

Appreciate any help you guys can provide

The barrel is not original to your RRand. Pictures would tell the whole story.

Pictures are needed to say any more than what Bob has stated, the barrel is definitely not original. As the barrel has been swapped it is not inconceivable that more was swapped out as well. Get some good pics and post 'em and it'll be easier to say more about it.

Colt .45 Auto on top of the barrel in the port sounds like a Colt commercial barrel from the '50s up to the Series 70 if it is in a small font. Your RR may have come with a High Standard barrel with HS on one side of the lower lug an P on the other. Fortunately these are usually available. The Colt barrel (if it is) should be 'in the white' on top of the chamber where it's marked. Owners of Colt Government Models are always looking for these barrels in good condition, so you won't have any trouble trading it for a HS. Colt military barrels were marked on the left side of the chamber, not visible in the port, and they were blued all over.
