FN was a valid serial number prefix for the Series 80 Gold Cups.

It is a series 80 Gold Cup National Match frame. The N in the prefix means (N)ational Match.

The Government models of that time frame had an FG prefix, the G meant (G)overnment Model.

More description or pictures would help a lot to tell if you had an original gun or somehow it was modified, etc.

That's a very nice Colt Gold Cup... and for those mags, any marked for an Officers/Defender will not fit your pistol. You want the ones marked 1911 .45 ACP... these should be for a Government model.

Specific recommendations just depends on what works best in your Colt. Some folks like Wilson Combat mags... some like Novak... and there's Chip McCormick... Mec-Gar too... Checkmate... of course, factory Colt mags and others.

I'll suggest that you not buy a large amount of one mag until you can find what your Gold Cup prefers.

+1 to Cliff's comments above.

I'd only add my preference of those listed.... I like the Colt factory mags and Checkmate mags for my Colts. For a few other pistols i use Tripp Research. I much prefer 7 round, flush-fit mags (the type that the gun was designed to use ;)), though i do have a few 8 round Tripp's mags. For defense purposes though, 7's are all that leave the house with me each day. Personal opinion only....

Good luck with your Gold Cup...that's a very nice pistol!

That is a genuine Series 80 Gold Cup National Match. One of Colt's finest.

Addressing the magazine issue my best luck has been with genuine Colt 7 round magazines from Brownells ($26 each) because they have the hybrid feed lips. Checkmate Industries 7 rounders ( hybrid feed lips) will work just as well. This forum does sell the Checkmate mags.

Do not try to buy genuine Colt magazines from anyone other than Brownells.
I tried and they were not right. Brownells' Colt mags were correct and functioned.

I do not recommend brands other than Colt or Checkmate because they have wadcutter feed lips and don't feed as well for my guns. I also do not recommend 8 round magazines for the same reason.

And I would say made after 88 since it has the trophy and the later hammer and probably does not have the collet barrel bushing. It would be interesting to see if the frontstrp is grooved or not under the grips.

And as I was finally able to log into photobucket, here is a picture of a 1988 in SS. It came with wrap-around Pachmeyers on it with a gold colt medallian. I replaced them with some Ajax silverwood grips and was happy to find the front strap was grooved. Also note the diff in the hammer and grip safety.

I guess Colt doesn't sell "genuine Colt magazines".

wetidlerjr, sure Colt sells genuine Colt mags, if and when they have them. Every time I called, Colt said their mags were spoken for for their own production.

I was referred to Brownells in every case.

So to make my statement more specific: don't try to buy genuine Colt magazines from any supplier other than Colt or Brownells.
