This may be a silly question, but is it normal to have to resort to a small mallet and punch in order to reinsert the MSH pin? I'm asking so because I noticed that this pin gets easily marred.
I don't have to. Make sure it's decocked and press up on the MSH from the bottom towards the hammer while pushing the MSH pin in. It should slide in with minimal fuss.

As nunya said, and I would say you should always be able to insert the pin half way, and then bump it the rest of the way in with a small plastic hammer.

It will probably go in easily for ALMOST 1/2 the way - remember the notch in the middle of the pin? The pin the on the bottom of the main-spring hole will seat in the notch - BUT you first have to force the MSH pin PAST the point - the "hard point", then it's easy to continue driving the pin in until it "clicks" and becomes hard to move again - at this point the MSH pin should be centered and all is well and done.

Some guns need some extra help in that area, some don't. Just the way it goes sometimes.

To prevent marring of the pin, try a rubber mallet or wood or brass punch to get it past the center bump.

What actually married the edge of that pin is the mainspring housing pin retainer.
