Since my NRM Commander is at Colt being diagnosed for spraying its brass all over the place (creating small nicks all over top of slide) I am thinking of having it sent over to their Custom Shop.
Anyone here have Colt install a S&A Beavertail Grip safety on one of your Colts? How was the work performed?? Colt mentioned that they use the S&A component so that is what would be used.
I am thinking of having them install a S&A BGS w/o the pad on the base. They mentioned to me that this is not a drop in part and 'slight modification' to the frame would need to be done. The duck bill is biting into the flesh and this needs to be done. I could go with a Wilson Drop in part but the fit looked abit cheesy with the one I got from Brownells.

Hi
I would go with Colt's shop any time you are putting Colt parts on a Colt pistol. There are a lot of people out there that will do a fine job putting aftermarket parts on.
Nothing wrong with Colt, but there are other options that may be quicker, better, or save some money.

72 views and mum's the word, I guess.
Thanks, PA Guns.
I have a very bad experience with a Custom Shop pistol. My best man, ordered a S70 repro with some specific things he wanted. From a list of about 15 items, CCS did only three (install a dovetail front sight was the most serious one, the rest I do not remember). And they invoiced him for $1,400. Knowing the street price of the pistol, my poor friend wonders why he paid double the price.
Follow-up contacts with Joe Canalli, the person in charge of the Custom Shop, didn't do much, so now I am ready to contact someone higher in command. I consider that a rip-off. Until this issue is resolved, my trust at CCS is very limited.

Hi
Just about anywhere in New Jersey is a quick drive over to EGW. They do nice work ....

John, thanks for your thoughts. I had spoken with CCS about adding in a GS and the gentlemen mentioned to me that it was under $100. This seemed abit low in price?
Also, he mentioned that only the part of the frame that was filed/cut would be reblued. Not sure if touch-up bluing can really replace a full frame reblue?

I have heard some good things about their work so will check that out.
Who does the bulk of the work on guns over there? George?
Thanks !!
Jay
If the twins allow me, tomorrow I'll try to find the correspondence between my friend and the custom shop, what he asked, what they told him and what they eventually did. I went through it a few months ago, and it was a joke. Joe Canali has no place running that business in Colt, and I mean every word I say.

My choice given your location would be EGW. EGW will do a better job of fitting the safety to the frame with smaller gaps showing.

Hi
There are a number of good people working at EGW. George is the main one I've dealt with.

I have a NRM Commander that while it was at Colt I had the "O Package" done to it. It turned out okay, I agree the two 1911's that have Don Williams work on them are better in the grip safety fit. With that said the same Commander had the internals replaced by a local smith and I replaced the Novak rear with a YoBo rear sight. The pistol was also refinished in one of the wonder spray and bake finishes. I know the GS could be fit better and if I was doing that specific pistol over I would change a thing or two but with that said I have carried that pistol daily for the past 18 months with no issues. Prior to the internals being replaced I had about 2500 rounds through it, since maybe another 3000. The pistol is a shooter and the only thing I would change would be the bushing. I was satisfied with the work I received from Colt and Mark was most helpfull in ensuring it was done right the fist time. For the price of the "O Package" without shipping due to warranty issues I think I got a fair price and the turnaround was decent. Of course I have been thinking of getting EGW's E Treat when it needs refinishing, I've heard good things about it.

John, I hear you loud and clear.
Hopefully Colt will get my warranty work done correctly and then I will decide whether to ship it to EGW or John Harrison.
Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.

If I were going to have something done, it would be the O model package.

I have an "O" package pistol.
The beavertail fit is quite good, the work is nicely done and the turn around was pretty quick.
I've also had work done by John Harrison, he is a true craftsman, and the service and communication is better. In fact, Johns communication and service is every bit as good as his work, which is to say amazing...

I agree, John will talk to you and gets the work done pretty fast. I suppose now that the word is really out about him, the waits will increase... sigh....

A few years back I purchased a Colt Special Combat in tu-tone
I sent it to CCS to have white dot sights installed and to round off the sharp edges on the rear sight I was charged $50.00 for the entire job and they did fantastic work on my Colt

I use my SCG from a holster and you're right about those sharp edges on the read site. $50 for what you had done seems like a good price.

They can do good work. For great work, go EGW, Harrison, etc.
EGW did some very nice work on my Delta Elite. Their reputation is impeccable.

Hi
I'm certainly an EGW fan. I'm wondering what the OP decided.
Bob
Here's my Series 70 repro done by Colt's Custom Shop. I am very pleased with it.
