View Full Version : Will The Value Increase or Drop If You Add A Pony
chevyext02

Thought I'd ask first before I go awall.
My Colt Custom ELCEN model does not have a horsey on it so I was thinking to have one put on. All it shows is COLT CUSTOM
Will this increase the value of the pistol or will it lose its value. The front still looks nice & everything but I think it would look even nicer with a pony.
Yey or Ney?......Where would you put it on?

Any time you alter a pistol from the way it left the factory you reduce its value to a collector. I would not add the "horsey."

Awwww :butthead: :butthead:
I was already imagining that pony on my CUSTOM COLT...... :butthead:
The value will drop like a rock from a high building! :lm:

It's your pistol. Do with it what makes you happy. I was just answering the question.
The reality is, most prospective buyers (if you were to offer it for sale) probably would not know that the Colt was added.
Others would.
Chevy, THAT is a very interesting Colt you've posted a photo of - can you make some larger, clearer versions showing both sides and all details?
Did you buy it as it is, or did you put on the grips and/or have it nickeled?
chevyext02
8th May 2008, 12:41
It is on the Colt Catalog
It is a COLT CUSTOM .38 Super
This model is the bright nickel finish: 02071ELC2

It's a Horsie not a pony.......... :appld: :appld:
sorry about that.....
please disregard the word pony
Per a fellow member here.......I am using the incorrect word....... :butthead:
Hawkmoon
8th May 2008, 13:13
If you'll identify that member, we'll have a word with him ...
It isn't a "pony." A pony is a small horse, like a Shetland. The Colt trademark is a ... "colt," which is not a small horse but a young horse.
We do tend to use the term "pony" as a kind of slang, but in the interest of accuracy it really isn't a pony.

It was HILL...............he said it........not me.......
Hill....please come forward..........defend yourself.........im on neither side at this point............
Wait wait.....wait just a minute.....so its not a Horsie....nor a pony........but a "colt"........... :butthead: :butthead:
Why can't we just use them all?

I'd say add the COLT to your pistol if you like. I'm fairly confident in saying that if you "were" to sell the pistol unfired to someone on this board.... well.... they'd have a range report to share with us just a few days later. I'd say forget the worries of what will happen to the value if you do this or do that. Bottom line is that it's a Colt.... you'll always get a fair deal if you wanted to trade or sell it.
I'm here, and that's one of my all time favorite models of new Colt. Yours I mean, the bright .38 Super. I asked you about it because from your first photo I couldn't really tell what it is, and thought it might be a one off custom that someone long ago had ordered.
It's a horse, a horsie to those who persist in calling it a pony. I think the mispelling to horsy gives a derrogatory tone to the word and so chose the form I use. With all of that I will not insist that you call it ANYTHING, or, in other words, call it whatever you like.

If you were to add the "Colt" on it you might have to refinish the firearm $$$$$$$

If you were to have the Rampant Pony rollmarked on your pistol I imaging that would alter the finish and would at least have to be repolished.
It would for sure loose some value but only to a collector.
If it were mine I would leave it as is but it is your pistol so I would do what makes you happy.

Should you decide to proceed with a Rampant Pony rollmarked on your pistol...
BY ALL MEANS SEND IT TO COLT FOR THIS!!! :)
At least you'll be able to say and prove that Colt did the rollmark... and that's as good as it gets!!!
Ah, you won't have to have the pistol refinished, it is bright stainless, it is not nickle plated. The logo is a Colt, not a horse nor a pony.

Right, save the receipt for the work and it's golden.
I think (no fooling now) that whether it adds or detracts value it does add appeal.
I hadn't known that Colt would do it for as little as $35. and now that I do I may well one day send them the slide for addition of the mark. My 1991a1 gave up it's originality to my change of trigger, hammer, MSH, slidestop, bushing, grips, firing pin, and thumb safety(s) and no longer appears as it did in the photo in this thread. I don't have a photo of it in it's current configuration but I like it much better now and it shoots as well or better than any other Colt pistol I own.
If by some unforeseeable emergency I was forced to sell all but one, I'm pretty sure that the 1991a1 would be staying with me.

Just another member to note that if Colt were to do the work and you save the paperwork it would probably not detract from the value, and might even add to it.

woooooooooh there horsey.....ok....so your telling me its a Bright Stainless Finish.....so whats the difference between the Bright Finish & the Nickel Finish....looks pretty much the same
OD...Im with you on this one..."its a COLT"
Hill,
I thought the same thing......have the Rampant Colt Stamped and save the paperwork....
I'm enjoying this too much. Thanks for the entertainment. But to answer on the last Q, the difference is stainless is all the way through as in solid whereas nickel is plated as in a thin outer layer. Modifications to engraving includind roll-marking usually will damage the plating immediately adjacent to the application. Solid material as in stainless in this instance will not.

As Dan said, this one is bright stainless, I have the same model, sans Rampant Colt. If you have the Colt added to the slide by Colt, it probably wouldn't increase the value, it might even detract from it some. But you'll have the Colt paperwork to show that they did it for you. If my Colt Custom ever needs to go to the factory for anything, it will most likely come back "branded" with the Rampant Colt. I shoot mine, not regularly, but it does get to the range when I can, so mine is not a collector piece. I just like the Colt on the pistol.
Your pistol is made of stainless steel which has a very high grade of polishing done. It's not plated with anything, that is what the whole pistol is made from. ;)

I LIKE the sound of that (OD)....I haven't shot this baby once..........The only thing I do with it is take it out for some air......drool on it for alittle and back to its safe......I would like to keep it in its new condition & pass it down to my little one....A Colt Emblem would of looked very nice but I guess I will just put it on the M1991a1 or maybe even on a Gold Cup I have hiding somewhere in my closet.

You can never hide that kind of money from a wife. They KNOW when it's supposed to be there and if it's not, you better duck quick! My advice, find another way, the couch isn't comfortable enough.
I have a friend that squirrels away $30 per payday and buys a firearm whenever he has enough set aside. It's a slow way, but it works well enough for him.

I find it amusing that we are informed that using the term "pony" or "horsie" in an informal manner is incorrect........but yet the same people call their pistols "pimp". Gosh Almighty, talk about a term inducing vomiting.............!!!!!

OD*,
I believe you "caught" the bright nickel plated vs. high polish stainless on this rampant Colt story... and made first mention of that fact!!!
Colt's shiny .38 Super is on my list as an all time favorite... and one I surely want to own someday.
I recall a conversation with one of the gals at Colt's Customer Service last year when she remarked how long it had been since Colt made a nickel plated pistol (SA revolvers excluded here)... but I don't remember the year she gave.
For those who insist on a bright and shiny nickel plated .38 Super, well there was the one that Springfield made...
http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w266/pentaxuser01/Folder%201/PB9114LLarge.jpg
I don't believe it's a current production "catalog" item anymore... and its MSRP was right up there with Colt's O2071ELC2 bright stainless .38 Super!
Cliff, weren't you working on a Springer, did you get it set-up the way you wanted it?

Now I find that amusing. I figured you would!
Every time I see one of the bright Colt 1911's I remember the scene in the ring after Muhammed Ali had beaten George Foreman in Ziarre ("Rumble in the Jungle").
There was a crowded rush into the ring to mob Ali and there in the waistband over the hip of a guy who weighed over 300 if he weighed a pound was the grip and much of the body of a Colt 1911 Nickel .45 for the whole world to see.
I think the guy must have been one of Ali's bodyguard troop as he seemed to be trying his best to control the crowd and get Ali out of there. He was faced away from the camera and the back of whatever it was he was wearing rode up, exposing his gleaming pistol.
pssst:..... horsey.......:D
