View Full Version : Kimber using 10mm Slide stops on ALL 1911s? Are SSs drop in?

About a year ago, I picked up a Kimber DW.
Gun had an issue from the get-go. It would lock back with rounds still in the mag.

Clarks Custom Guns is local to me, so I let Jim Jr take a look at it.

He said that Kimber was putting out 1911s, regardless of caliber, with 10mm slide stops, I had one, and this was my issue. At that time, he didnt have a blued or black SS in stock, so he "modded" the existing one. Since then, it has ran like a song. Apparently whatever tweak they did to it, fixed it.
I contacted Kimber, and they quickly admitted to the issue, and promply shipped me a true .45 Slide Stop. I never installed it since the modded one worked.

Anyhow, im about to order a few parts for the pistol. Some new mags, springs, ect and figured id pick up a slide stop while I was at it.Opting to avoid the Kimber unit as it would be one less MIM piece.
Also, upon inspection of the updated unit that Kimber sent me, it appeared that Kimber had done nothing more than "mod" one of the 10mm stops just as Clarks did. Nice.

Question: Are slide stops a drop-in part, or will they require fitting?
I was thinking of going with an Ed Brown Hardcore.

They are close to drop in. You may need to tweak them so they enter the frame easily, might need a detent for the plunger, and they might need some massaging to avoid touching rounds in the mag.

Basically simple stuff you can do with hobby files.

I have had to modify a couple. Mostly, *most* slide stops drop into *most* receivers.

There are caliber differences, though. When I did my RIA conversion to 9mm, I bought a name brand 9mm slide stop. (Don't recall if it was Wilson, Ed Brown, or whose.) The pistol wouldn't run -- the ogive on the bullets hung up on the slide stop and caused a jam when feeding. I put the original .45 slide stop back in, it cleared the bullets just fine and still locked the slide on empty.

Hi,

You might want to think about an EGW oversized Slide stop. They're not MIM (nothing EGW makes is MIM!) and you'll most likely benefit from the slightly larger diameter of the pin, which will help accuracy a bit. I bought one and I'm pleased with the part.

The EGW slide stop in stainless and blued steel is a good one the pin has been machined to .200" and is not MIM it is investment cast however, nice part.

EGW is great but whenI bought one it took some serious fitting. Most WIlson slidestops have been drop in's for me. All depends on the gun!

Hmmm...

Serious fitting? that's a bit odd, but like you said, it depends on the gun. Yes Log, it is an investment casting, but George will soon be fabricating CNC'd Slide Stops in different diameters, in increment from .200"-.205", truly serving the custom market. The SS's will also be void of any checkering or serrations, a blank canvas, so they can be customized even further.
