View Full Version : wilson combat extended slide stop for GI
Just wondering if this Wilson Combat extended slide stop will work without any modifications for my SA GI model. Im a bit new to the 1911 scene, but really enjoying getting my hands into it. just not super comfortable with any machining.
i hate my short thumb haha
*oops, sorry, i noticed this is supposed to go in the parts bin. my apologies

There is no machining involved, just some minor filing. It requires a lot of little filing and patience. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, find a good 1911 pistolsmith to do for you or send it Wilson to have them install it for you.
If you are lucky, it will drop in and work. If not, some minor fitting will fix you up. The question is, why you need an extended slide stop? Learn to hit the slide stop with the thumb of your left hand, as it comes up to grip the gun and you won't need the extended ones.
i have weak thumbs! that, and it hasn't been worn down enough where it's an easy press. even my boss, whos a very intensive gun collector said the slide stop seemed extremely hard to take down and had to use both thumbs for a few times. plus, with the extended slide stop, itll give a nice reach with my short right thumb

Right, but as John said, you shouldn't be dropping the slide with your right thumb. It should be dropped with your left hand thumb as the mag slams home.
If you do it slowly, you will see that as the magazine locks in, your thumb hovers right by the stop. You drop it as your weak hand wraps back around your firing hand.
To release it with your right thumb will mean you need to alter your firing hand grip, even with an extended slide stop, and that's never a good idea.
ah, very good point and noted
Also, the extended slide release has more weight than the standard one. Lots of times, an extended one has made a perfectly good gun to behave strangely.
well, if all fails, ill revert back to the old one :)

just a small update! installed the slide stop today with the wilson combat and everything fits smooth! Great feel and nice easy release! can't wait to take it to the range! also put in an ed brown mainspring housing w/ plungers/spring/etc and was an easy drop in as well!
first mods on my first gun... completed successfully! i love my 1911!

Most everyone who has this complaint is trying to release the slide with a
empty mag. in place. If you remove the mag first, hold the slide and release the slide and allow it to to ease closed, you will find your problem is solved.
The gun should release easily with a loaded mag in place. Never let a 1911
spring home on a empty chamber. It's not designed to work that way

'Bout the 14th time you have a premature slide lock from bumping the long lever or its inertia kicking it into engagement, you will be ready to go GI. I went through two of the gadgets before realizing they were not compatible with the gun.
