View Full Version : Colt M1991a1 no pony on it. Why?

chevyext02
7th May 2008, 14:47
Silly question but I though I'd ask.
I purchased a Colt M1991a1 Model: 01991 & I noticed that it doesn't have a pony on it.
I was doing some research on this forum & a member has the same model but at the end of the slide it has a pony on it.
Did some models have a the pony & some didn't? Anybody?. Thanks

None of my 1991A1s have the Rampant Pony rollmarked. I do not recall ever seeing one rollmarked as such stock from the factory.

I did alittle bit more research and I think I found the answer to my question :D ...........
There is an old thread from Member: OD
He sent is M1991a1 to Colt for some service and requested the pony as well..The pony has to go on mines too.....here is a picture of his M1991a1:

Mine has a archrd msh with lanyard loop, ambi safeties, short trigger, wide spur hammer, and the last three of it's serial number on the safeties, the barrel, the bushing, the bottom of the msh, and no horsie.

He had the horsie applied by request to a gun sold without?
Oh, dear.
Another rare and valuable variation for the next generation of collectors.

If they're like some of today's collectors they'll spot the
Fone' from across the room. Hammer, grips, sight, MSH, horsie....sheeesh, what a shame. Another Colt gone to bubba :)

i have had 3 of those style 91A1's. my only complaint on the guns were that they didnt have a pony on them. i know they are on the grips, but i never kept the stock grips on there anyway.

if i would have thought about it, i probably would have had colt stamp it on there. i have always liked the pony at the rear of the slide.

either way, the 1991A1 old rollmark 1911's were a value pistol, and they were very well built. wish i could find one now when i actually have the money in my pocket!!!

I don't mean to brag about mines but I bought mines for $470 on the AR15 forum....the pistol is in prestine condition.......a fellow soldier passed it to me & he stated he really had no use for it & had it kept in his safe collecting dust.........He originally had it for $450...I offered $470 so that he could bring it to me.........and vuala..........another Colt added to my collection........that makes me ten Colt 1911's richer.. :D

One of the Dan's reasons for that thread was to show me that a Rampant Colt could be added to a pistol. I was complaining that my Colt Custom didn't have a horsey and I was rather upset that it didn't have one.

I think that's kind of funny, Dan got a pistol "bubafied"....... I wonder which one of those gunsmiths at Colt is named "Bubba"? He just had the pistol modified by Colt to meet his specifications.

I only have the one. The guy sold the other one on me. I guess I took to long to give him the money. Does the trigger make a noticeable difference? Mine is a sharp little thing. It nearly cuts the finger if fired more than 100 rounds.

OD*

Makes a huge difference to me, much easier to reach the trigger on the DA shot.

Send your slide to Colt and they will apply the Pony for $35.

?
If you are just sending in the slide, does it still have to go through an FFL holder or regular mail?

OD*
8th May 2008, 11:28
It does not have to go thru an FFL, the complete pistol doesn't have too either, if you are sending it to an FFL via a private carrier, FEDEX, UPS etc. If you send the complete pistol, you must use an FFL to send it by USPS. Your slide (just the slide) is not considered a firearm by BATFE regulations.

Very interesting information to me......so just send in the slide through USPS
Anyone in particular you would recommend at Colt's Manuf. to speak with regarding the pony stamp.

I going to send in this slide as well for the pony.
It is a Colt Custom ELCEN model. It has no pony on it.....just COLT CUSTOM
Would you recommend it or would the value drop on it?
Where would be a good place to have it stamped?

I would have it done because I like the Rampant Colt on my pistols.

It would not increase value, I don't think, it might decrease value some if you are keeping it for a collector piece. I shoot mine.

I would only have it done by Colt and keep the receipt to show that the factory did it for you.

If only sending the slide you can use the post office. If sending the whole pistol, it has to go by FedEx or UPS next day air and the recipient must have an FFL. They can send it back to you even though you don't have an FFL because they have one. If I didn't get this right, someone will be along and spank me shortly for screwing it up.

In a nutshell, you are correct. The key point is that in the case of a repair, there is no transfer of ownership, and that is the primary function of FFL paperwork. You sent it to them, they sent it back to you....no transfer. Depending on which carrier you use, you might get some push back if you try to go through one of those UPS Stores. They may tell you to take it to their distribution center.....that is if you tell them it's a pistol, instead of Machine parts! But be sure to insure it! :)
