Well, per my earlier thread, I have decided to submit the paper work to become a LEO. I have decided to apply to the local county I live in, due to a little slower pace. Thanks to you all here for providing information in helping me with this decision.
Thanks again,
Jim

Good luck, Jimbo!
I figure there are two kinds of cops. There's the occasional moron who just wants a badge and a gun so he can bust some heads, and there are young folk who actually give a damn, what kind of world we live in. God bless the latter, and He'll take care of the former too.
Jimbo, something tells me you're one of the better sort. (If you weren't, you wouldn't be a member here.) The next few months will be hard. Be patient with your teachers, and with yourself. Now this forum is a gun-related site, and we all enjoy shooting. But as an LEO, your pistol will be your least important equipment. Your eyes and ears, your brain, and your pen and notebook are what will make the law work for us all.
Of course, if they give you a hot cruiser, that's kewl too. ;)

Good luck.
We need more LEOs around the country who don't think we serfs shouldn't be allowed to own and carry firearms. (That pesky Constitution thing notwithstanding.)

Actually, my daughter will probably say its another attempt to make her life hard. Aren't teenagers great.

Jimbo: Are you looking to work in or around Richmond? From what I hear and read it far from slower paced in that area. Good luck with your venture and stay safe.
Good luck Jimbo, and watch your six.

Jimbo,
Good luck. Hope your agency allows you to carry a 1911. I've been on the job 30+ years. Took about 22 or 23 of those years before I was able to convince a chief to allow single-action autos...which for me means a 1911.
Hawkmoon,
I'm an NRA Life Menber. Been an NRA Firearms Instructor since 1978. I think everybody should have a gun...There are more good guys than there are bad guys. Seems like it might not be such a bad idea to issue guns to the "serfs" who don't have them.

Icepick, I don't know if they let us carry 1911's here in the county. Most of the dept. I've talked to are issued Sigs. The City of Richmond can ONLY carry Sigs. But I'm not sure of the requirements of the county I am applying to. Out here there are a few less 18 yr old kids that like to run. The city also (from what I've been told), runs an average of 10 or more calls per shift. The county runs 4, I feel a slower work load will not have as much a chance for burn out. Besides cars were made for chasing kids, not my legs. LOL

Good luck to you Jimbo; hope things work out for you. That 4 call per shift can be misleading - sometimes things will be real quiet for awhile and then all hell breaks loose at the same time. :) Be careful with those chocolate donuts as they have a tendency to bring the steering wheel closer to your duty belt. ;)
Adios,
Bob

Good luck, Jimbo. And as advice, the nicer a guy you are, the more important it is to watch your 6. As I know from previous LEO experience, it's the nice guys whom the bad guys try to take advantage of. Be CAREFUL.

Little update, passed all tests. But didn't make it through the interview. Had to try, they want me to come back in 1 yr, but I don't think that will happen. Testing was brutal and I'm not going to go through it again.
Thanks for all the good wishes everyone.

What's the quotation? "'Tis better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all."
Think of it as their loss. God speed.

Why not try again? Now you know what to expect. I did a background investigation on one applicant who tried three times before being accepted. I recommended that he be hired and I've heard that he retired last year after 20 years of good service.
There can be a number of reasons why they will not take you now but would be willing to in the future. Keep your nose clean, stay in good physical shape, and consider becoming a volunteer with the department,

A little update. I was a little on the bummed out side with not going in this time.
Turns out a problem with my back has gotten worse. I "supposedly" tore a muscle back when I was in the military. Surgery may be in order over the next couple of months, trying to avoid that. Doubtful that it would have made it through the academy that is due to start next month.
It sucks that everything worked out this way, but what was best seems to have come about. I will stay in my present course, but will always have the greatest of respect for you in uniform. Keep up the great work!!

Good luck on becoming a LEO. You will meet alot of interesting people.
And try hard to refrain from pushing some of them into the flow of traffic as they use every 4 letter word known to man to describe their opinion of you!!
I actually managed to survive 8 yrs as a leo without doing such but it is difficulthttp://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

I work for a SO and still love it.
My best advice is this. Take pride in the way you look and dress. Most people will look at you and decide if it worth it to take you on by the way you look. If you look neat and like you know what you are doing things work out ok most of the time.
Learn all you can from you FTO and other officers you work with.
Train hard at the academy.
The best thing I can tell you is have fun
Stay safe

Hey Jimbo, while going through some of the threads I became curious if LE worked into your life or not. It was something I wanted real bad after getting out of the military, but went into computers. After 5 years I made my dream a reality and I am now working on 32 yrs.

Sorry for not replying, knew there was someplace I hadn't come in a while.
I have not gone back and tried again, when I first did this it was the last chance. Sort of a now or never type of thing. I have no regrets. Life is full of disappointment, but usually things work out for the best.
Thanks for all the encouragment from all of you, it really means alot.

Wow, where has the time gone, seems like yesterday when you first posted. Sometimes lemons have a way of working into lemonade. :)
