I noticed that most -if not all- barrels advertised as drop-in are made out of some sort of stainless steel called 416. So I was wondering if there's any reason to use that particular kind of steel and whether there's a drop-in barrel made out of carbon steel.

The "Roto" brand barrels sold by Sarco are carbon steel and are probably as close to being drop-in as anything sold specifically as a "drop-in" barrel. The Sarco barrels are decent quality (albeit not "match grade") and affordable at around $40.

I was asking this because I read somewhere in this forum that barrels made out of 416ss may actually shear off. But I do not know whether that's true or not--I'm *no* metallurgist.
Too many rumors about stainless steel barrels being bad. I've never heard of one failing though, at least I do not remember of such a case.
G.I. barrels are carbon steel, and should drop in.

Kart makes an "Easy Fit" barrel and bushing set, these are carbon and require a bit of fitting of the upper lugs. Ed Brown Products makes a "Drop-In" bbl and bushing kit from T-416 SS barstock. These are rather spendy options.
I have difficulty reconciling the words, "drop-in," and, "barrel."
As far as failures, it's mostly about heat treating, not the stock itself. Every so often, something will slip past QC, but it's rare. 416 can produce a fine barrel.
