I am going over a 1911 to check things out as I just replaced a barrel bushing and had to fit it a little bit to make sure the barrel dropped into place with no spring back. I'd like to check to see if there is no undue stress on the barrel link, but I don't understand how to check this. I read an article on it, but I did not understand it. Could someone explain to me a simple check to make sure the link does not have undue stress on it?

Thanks....

The link's function is to get the barrel down and out of the way of the rushing slide. Unless the barrel is riding the link hard, there isn't any stress on it when the gun is in battery.

Slip the slidestop pin through the link and swing it into the in-battery position. If the pin is touching the bottom of the lower barrel lug...it's not riding the link.

Assemble the gun with the slidestop pin through the frame and link in the normal way...except leave the slidestop arm hanging vertically. Leave the recoil spring plug out so the spring doesn't fight you. Pull the slide full rearward. Push the barrel back firmly and hold it there. The slidestop arm should swing freely with no binding. If it gets into a bind, the barrel is being stopped by the link, and will cause it to stretch, or even break.

i've tried that.... I usually slide the slide stop pin in and let it hang before pulling on the slide... the pin just swings. never understood that until now.
