According to Clawson, from approximately C190,000 to C215,083 serial number range.

PS ...
I dug out the Clawson book, he has the above info on page 207 as being used "between the wars" then on the next page, he has;
COLT
45 AUTO.
as being used from 1947 thru circa 1960, I would take that to mean that the magazine shown would be correct for your 1951.

I was extremely fortunate to find TWO of these on ebay some time ago to put with my 1953 Gov Model. They should be pinned bases - take a look. What made it even better was, at the time I didn't know that they could have been 'correct' - I got them because the lettering style matched some of the lettering on the slide. Even if they turned out to be not correct, I would still keep them for that pistol.

I assume you mean the one above.
By the way, if the base is parkarized, it was used for 1911A1. Blue base for the commercial.
Here is the base.
Looks pinned to me.

The large squashed font stopped with the cessation of magazine production during WWII. Colt marked post-war magazines exhibit smaller font similar to modern magazines. The decimal point preceding 45 appeared in the 60's.

Thanks Doran
However as Clawson notes, some leftover 1940's mags could have been used post war.

'some leftover 1940's mags could have been used post war.'
Yes, that's what I had heard. Technically not correct but not impossible to have been furnished with the pistol. That's all it took for me, since I had my pistol redone, and these old mags matched it fairly well - plus the 'squashed' font matched. Makes a nice package. Somebody can try to figure it out after I'm gone!

Here's mine; it looked bad when I got it, having been re-blued at least once, but internally it was excellent. I had Bill Adair blue it and restore some markings. Don't blame him for the brush-blue finish, I specified it. I was looking for the pre-war M1911A1 look, but after I got it I decided to use some very nice cocobolo grips I found which really don't fit either the original look or the pre-war, but I kind of like it.

In the magazine pic, the grips were the previous checkered walnut, not the coco.
Looks good to me, Saxman. http://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

As stated above, the mags are not original to the gun. They are both polished-blued. The base is pictured above.

Flusher, beautiful pistol! I just acquired a '52, but still looking for a '51. Hopefully, I'll find one as pretty as yours.

Any chance the mag is original?
If so, lets see the mag base.
