I just wanted to get some opinions on a new magwell. Also should I have a gunsmith install or get a drop-in kit?

I'd suggest one from Fusion, since you will be able to add a magwell and get rid of the ILS in one part. www.fusionfirearms.com. Smith & Alexander design, easy drop-in install, then simply match the bevelling of the frame to the well and coldblue it. Easy to do yourself.

I'd also throw out a Wilson Combat Speed-Chute.... it is a drop in as well that would eliminate the ILS. Personally, if I can change out a beavertail and a MSH, then I know you can as well. No need to spend money for someone to do it. Besides, it really helps you get a better working knowledge of your pistol. Just take your time, and use the proper tools so you don't scratch or mar the finish on the frame.

The Wilson is the same basic design as the Fusion except with the Fusion you can take the well off if you want to and still leave the MSH in without it, with the Wilson you can't use the MSH without the well.

I don't suppose these are 30 LPI are they? I'd try one in a hurry if they are. The site doesn't say, so I'm assuming they're 20 LPI.

Straight from Wilson......
The Speed-Chute® is a two piece combination mainspring housing with cut checkering (20x30 LPI) and oversized magazine guide.

For the Fusion, call or email Bob Serva, he'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have on it. He's a great guy, extremely friendly and easy to deal with.
The nice thing about the removable well one is that you can use it in stock or modified competion classes. Pop out the pin, unscrew the well, pop the pin back in, and you're ready to go.

I'm sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I realize the Wilson is 30 LPIx20 LPI. I was hoping the Fusion was 30 LPI, but all the lower priced units are usually 20 LPI. Just to be safe, I'll probably go with the Wilson. I'm already familiar with the quality of their's. I've installed several over the years.

I was hoping the Fusion was 30 LPI, but all the lower priced units are usually 20 LPIDon't get that confused, Fusion is far from low-quality. He's producing some of the best bar-stock parts and internals I've seen, everything with just the right amount of oversizeing to allow you to truely tailor the fits. I have built two pistols with almost exclusive Wilson parts and one with exclusively Fusion parts, and they are top-notch. The only thing I use from Wilson now is the extractors, because they are just so easy to set and install. But hammers, sears, disconnectors, my back-ups are now Fusions. Shoot Bob an email, ask him if it's 20 or 30lpi, noting that you'd prefer the 30lpi and see what he says.

Sure, I save all my parts in case I ever need to restore to original.

I bought the S&A from Brownells after I got mine and it dropped right in with no problems. I bought the new spring set from one of the former sponsors here so I can't really help with that one. It came as a set to convert from the ILS to a regular system.
