My Dad bought it from the N.R.A. for $17.00 and gave it to me...Those "must" have been the days.

It's a nice-looking US&S M1911A1. Perhaps your image is too large.

Your picture is to large, down size it to 800X600.

Without being able to see the serial number range, it's hard to tell what frame you have. Looks like a 1945 Remington Rand..... but it is definately not a US&S.

So far as I can tell, it has an Ithaca frame, US&S slide, inspected by Frank J. Atwood and ser. #'ed (2628xxx) in 1945....My copy of the letter from the N.R.A. is not dated.
And if you think about it...$17.00 was a couple weeks pay back in the mid 40's...how many weeks do you have to work for a new SPRINGFIELD ? ...About the same more-or-less ? ...not bad!

You don't need to see the serial number to know it's an Ithaca frame. The position and font of the M 1911A1 U.S. ARMY marking is different for each manufacturer.
If you've got one of each manufacturer, lay them side and side for comparision.
